Description: A hitherto undescribed hemoglobin anomaly has been detected in a North Carolina Negro family. This new hemoglobin, designated type I, which has been electrophoretically characterized, was found in combination with normal adult A hemoglobin in 6 of 17 members of one family. In each, the ratio of normal to abnormal hemoglobin was similar. Hematologic abnormalities were not observed in any of the affected individuals. Ultracentrifugation sedimentation constants, absorption spectra, solubility and oxygen carrying capacity studies showed no differences from hemoglobin A. It is proposed that the I hemoglobin gene is an allele of hemoglobin A and is transmitted as a simple dominant character in a manner similar to that of sickle cell hemoglobin. The homozygous form of I hemoglobin has not as yet been observed.

Description: We are reporting in vitro observations of sickle-unsickle transformation of freely suspended single cells (HbSS) induced by oxygenation-deoxygenation. The events were recorded by cinematography (phase optics, 16 mm cinematography). In addition, cells were fixed after progressive increments of oxygenation for subsequent scanning-beam electron microscopy. These studies seem to warrant the following conclusions regarding HbSS erythrocytes: (1) There is variability in the propensity to sickling of cells seemingly subjected to the same environment. (2) Repetitive sickling of a single cell does not result in identical sickle deformities. (3) Disk to sickle to disk transformation may occur without apparent membrane loss or distortion or may be accompanied by the shedding of microspherules or by the loss of microspherules and permanent cell deformation. (4) Red cell "flicker" normally seen by phase-contrast cinemicrophotography disappears early in the sickling process and recurs during unsickling. (5) Sickling and unsickling as visually detected required 10-15 sec.

Description: Deep Space Network support of Helios mission operations is discussed. Included is information on the Helios 1, 7th aphelion, Helios 2, 5th aphelion, science experiments, 22-bit error polynomial code (EPC) testing, and other mission-related activities. Mission operations and status are summarized and specific correction commands are described. Special activities and experiments include Faraday rotation data collection and a solar wind tracks experiment.

Description: The responsibilities and structural organization of the Operations Planning Group of NASA Deep Space Network (DSN) Operations are outlined. The Operations Planning group establishes an early interface with a user's planning organization to educate the user on DSN capabilities and limitations for deep space tracking support. A team of one or two individuals works through all phases of the spacecraft launch and also provides planning and preparation for specific events such as planetary encounters. Coordinating interface is also provided for nonflight projects such as radio astronomy and VLBI experiments. The group is divided into a Long Range Support Planning element and a Near Term Operations Coordination element.

Description: Spacecraft extended mission coverage does not generally carry a high priority, but Helios was fortunate in that a combination of separated viewperiods and unique utilization of the STDN Goldstone antenna have provided a considerable amount of additional science data return, particularly at key times such a perihelion and/or solar occultation.
