Summary In the case of a nodular graphitic cast iron used technically and containing 3.55% C, 2.56% Si and 0.31% Mn, the silicon is distributed very unevenly after the usual ferritizing heat treatment at 920°/4 hours and slow opening of the furnace. Heat treatments in the triple phase regionα,+γ+ C result only after several hours in constant structural amounts corresponding roughly to equilibrium, but nonetheless the silicon in the like phases does not show a complete balance after these periods. On holding in the triple phase regionα +γ+ C there is a new distribution of the silicon between the ferrite and austenite phases, the ferrite becoming much richer in silicon. With adequately long annealing periods and water cooling the Si-contents of the ferrite and martensite yield theα andγ-endpoints of the triple phase regionα +γ+ C in a horizontal section at the temperature in question. This means in practice that such varieties of cast iron should be heated through the triple phase region rapidly when they are being annealed; if the heating is slow a very silicon-rich ferrite will result, which requires higher augteniting temperatures or it may seriously interfere with the diffusion balancing of the silicon in the austenite region. Likewise, the fact ensues that a homogeneous austenite may not be cooled too slowly through the triple phase regionα +γ+ C, since in analogous manner there may result a demixing of the silicon. These findings do not however apply in the same measure to Mn-free varieties of cast iron of the same composition. Further experiments have shown that manganese interferes with the silicon-diffusion or with the silicon-equalization in the triple phase regionα +γ+ C.
