Notes: Abstract A comparison is made between the perturbation theories of Hori and Deprit which are based on the use of Poisson brackets. General recurrence formulae are presented for Hori's theory which are analogous to those in Deprit's theory. Explicit relations between the determining functions for the two theories are indicated through the sixth order, these results having been obtained by a novel computer program. A general argument for the equivalence of the theories to all orders is given.

Notes: Abstract Eliminating many of the trigonometric function calls by a suitable series transformation has resulted in a substantial reduction of on-line computing time while very long Poisson series are being evaluated. A further reduction has been realized by applying a short SNOBOL processor to the FORTRAN coding of the transformed series which eliminates many of the multiplication operations during the course of series evaluation.

Notes: Abstract In some perturbation theories it is possible to avoid expansion of the perturbations in powers of the eccentricity, obtaining results in closed form by using the true or eccentric anomaly instead of the mean anomaly. This paper describes an algorithm (which has been programmed for the 6600 computer using the formula manipulation system TRIGMAN) for automatically performing the integrals which arise in these theories.

Notes: Abstract A generalized precompiler for systems performing algebraic manipulation of Poisson series has been written. It accepts a trigonometric superset of FORTRAN IV similar to Jefferys' TRIGRUN language (Jefferys, 1972) and generates a valid FORTRAN IV program which drives an abstract formula manipulation machine. This machine is designed to be generally compatible with any manipulation system, and has been implemented with two such systems. The precompiler is written in standard FORTRAN IV and was designed to allow simple conversion for use on most computers.

Notes: Abstract The Space Telescope offers astronomers for the first time an opportunity to do precision astrometry from space. In this paper, the Space Telescope is described, along with its initial complement of instruments. Particular attention is paid to the Fine Guidance Sensors, which will be the principal astrometric instrument. The responsibilities of the Space Telescope Astrometry Team towards the Space Telescope Astrometry project are described. A description of the scientific results to be expected from Space Telescope astrometry is given. The impact of other proposed Space Astrometry projects, such as the European Astrometry Satellite, on Space Telescope Astrometry is also discussed.

Notes: Abstract It is almost impossible to construct a general theory of the motion of a strongly perturbed dynamical system using classical perturbation theory because this approach uses a reference orbit (e.g. a Keplerian ellipse) which is very different from the actual orbit. A general method, pioneered by Jefferys, is presented here. This method allows each quasi-periodic orbit (for instance a strongly perturbed two body problem: JVIII is the typical example) to specify the coordinates to be used. These coordinates are discovered by a truncated infinite series of coordinate transformations. The transformations are implemented using the idea that the nature of a dynamical system is embodied in the symplectic form. The method is illustracted by a simple example. With modern algebraic and series manipulation languages on present day computers all one needs to begin using this approach is a good numerical integration, the end product being a series for each coordinate. Further weak perturbations are easily incorporated into this semi-analytical solution by the usual methods.

Notes: Abstract A translator has been written which simplifies the programming of problems with the formula manipulation system TRIGMAN. It allows for the introduction of a new data type, SERIES, into a FORTRAN program, and translates the user's program into legal FORTRAN. It should not be difficult to adapt it for other formula manipulation systems now being used in Celestial Mechanics.

Notes: Abstract H. K. Eichhorn had a lively interest in statistics during his entire scientific career, and made a number of significant contributions to the statistical treatment of astrometric problems. In the past decade, a strong movement has taken place for the reintroduction of Bayesian methods of statistics into astronomy, driven by new understandings of the power of these methods as well as by the adoption of computationally-intensive simulation methods to the practical solution of Bayesian problems. In this paper I will discuss how Bayesian methods may be applied to the statistical discussion of astrometric data, with special reference to several problems that were of interest to Eichhorn.
