Summary The thermal decomposition of [CoCl2(py)2] was investigated over the 121°C to 370°C temperature range and the following dissociations were observed. $$\begin{gathered} [CoCl_2 (py)_2 ](s) \to CoCl_2 (py)(s) + py(g) \hfill \\ 3CoCl_2 (py)(s) \to [Co_3 Cl_6 (py)_2 ](s) + py(g) \hfill \\ [Co_3 Cl_6 (py)_2 ](s) \to 3CoCl_2 (s) + 2(py)(g) \hfill \\ \end{gathered} $$ Quantitative thermodynamic data, as well as kinetic data, were obtained by performing dynamic and isothermal studies on the complex. Electron microscopy studies revealed decomposition on the surface of the crystals. Additional thermodynamic data were obtained by studying the CoCl2/py system in acetone.
