Notes: Interest in the economic role of the large enterprise has led to numerous studies of economic dependency and regional economic health and performance. In this paper, an interindustry accounting framework is conjoined with Dun and Bradstreet corporate ownership data to provide a fresh perspective on the effects of external economic ownership. The aggregate level measurement method is applied to fifteen multicounty regions in the state of Illinois, and reveals considerable variation in the measures generated. High regional dependence measures are directly related to employment stability and inversely related to employment growth.Although interindustry accounts have been used most commonly in economic impacts assessment and forecasting, a broader range of potential applications lies in their use as descriptive and explanatory measurement tools. This paper addresses the external ownership issue at the macrolevel by testing the relationship between measures of input-output dependence and indices of regional employment growth and stability, and demonstrates, in the process, a non-conventional use of interindustry data. The conjoining of interindustry data and the Dun and Bradstreet data produces a unique set of measures of regional economic structure.

Notes: As socioeconomic systems become more complex, we must be alert to new and innovative conceptual approaches. Among these, object orientation is argued to have especially high potential for modeling in fields where simulation can play an important role. Programming languages and graphical software tools supporting object-oriented modeling are beginning to dominate. The three-prolonged development of conceptual approach, supporting software, and computing hardware enhances our ability to model and understand the behaviour of increasingly complex socioeconomic systems. This paper presents the fundamental elements of object oriented modeling, and advocated its use in Regional Science.

Notes: . This paper presents a probabilistic specification of coefficients in the input- output modeling framework. Although previous works on probabilistic input-output models attribute uncertainty to measurement and sampling errors, this specification derives from systematic variation directly attributable to industrial, institutional, and location factors. Experiments with national input-output data support the existence of such variation. Employing the specification not only yields a more flexible aggregate modeling framework capable of producing interval impact estimates, but also an alternative perspective on such issues as interregional differentiation and structural comparison, the identification of key industrial sectors, aggregation, and spatial variation in production.

Notes: Regional analysts face a trade-off between timeliness and detail of commodity-industry data. The trade-off exists because the Bureau of Economic Analysis national aggregated annual update tables are published for years more recent than those for which the disaggregated benchmark accounts are available. Conventional wisdom holds that regionalization should precede aggregation, so a disaggregated foundation table is preferred to an aggregation of that same table. This paper shows that the Table Disaggregation and Adjustment (TDA) method of Jackson and Comer (1993) produces a better foundation for regionalization than an unadjusted benchmark, price-updated benchmark, or aggregated annual update table.

Notes: Analysts faced with the challenge of constructing a regional input-output table from partial or nonsurvey-based data typically adapt a national input-output table to reflect the regional economic structure. Detailed benchmark input-output tables with more than 500 industry sectors are compiled for years at five-year intervals, but are many years out of date by the time they are released. Annual updates are compiled for intervening years, but detail only 85 industry sectors. Analysts therefore must choose between the currency of the data and its detail in the national table that serves as the reference. This paper presents a table disaggregation and adjustment (TDA) method for combining the information from the detailed benchmark tables with the more current but aggregated data. Empirical tests demonstrate that the TDA method generates base data that analytically outperform the aggregated annual update data.

Notes: Abstract. In his response to Closure in Cole's Reformulated Leontief Model (Jackson et al. 1997) Cole presents the mechanics of his solution. His spreadsheet demonstration of the model, however, fails to fully address the conceptual issues and model specification concerns raised in our critique. His demonstration does enable us to provide a sorely needed formalization that pinpoints the inconsistencies in his model. While we join with Cole in urging modellers to strive for clarity, transparency, and utility, we caution against allowing these goals to cause us to lose sight of internal consistency requirements.

Notes: This note addresses the role of survey information and expert opinion in constructing input-output tables. In contrast to assuming polar positions between tables based on expert opinion and tables based on empirical observation, we argue that the distinction is not well-defined. We provide, as evidence, a comparison of U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) data on the use of commodities by industries with corresponding Bureau of the Census (BOC) Census of Manufacturers data on selected use of materials by industry (published as Census Table 7). Results show that changes in BEA data cannot be explained by corresponding changes in the Census data on which they are founded.
