    Description: Magnetic skyrmions are promising for building next-generation magnetic memories and spintronic devices due to their stability, small size and the extremely low currents needed to move them. In particular, skyrmion-based racetrack memory is attractive for information technology, where skyrmions are used to store information as data bits instead of traditional domain walls. Here we numerically demonstrate the impacts of skyrmion-skyrmion and skyrmion-edge repulsions on the feasibility of skyrmion-based racetrack memory. The reliable and practicable spacing between consecutive skyrmionic bits on the racetrack as well as the ability to adjust it are investigated. Clogging of skyrmionic bits is found at the end of the racetrack, leading to the reduction of skyrmion size. Further, we demonstrate an effective and simple method to avoid the clogging of skyrmionic bits, which ensures the elimination of skyrmionic bits beyond the reading element.     Description: Pancreatic beta cells lower insulin release in response to nutrient depletion. The question of whether starved beta cells induce macroautophagy, a predominant mechanism maintaining energy homeostasis, remains poorly explored. We found that, in contrast to many mammalian cells, macroautophagy in pancreatic beta cells was suppressed upon starvation. Instead, starved beta cells induced lysosomal degradation of nascent secretory insulin granules, which was controlled by protein kinase D (PKD), a key player in secretory granule biogenesis. Starvation-induced nascent granule degradation triggered lysosomal recruitment and activation of mechanistic target of rapamycin that suppressed macroautophagy. Switching from macroautophagy to insulin granule degradation was important to keep insulin secretion low upon fasting.     Notes: Oil exploration requires quantitative determination of structural geometry in sedimentary basins. This leads to back-and-forth use of geological methods, e.g. cross-section balancing and geophysical techniques, such as tomography, and the synthesis becomes tedious, especially in three dimensions. This suggests that they should be as much as possible quantitatively integrated into a single consistent framework. For this integration, we propose using inversion techniques, i.e. multicriteria optimization. We locally model a geological structure as a (geometric) foliation, the leaves of which represent deposition isochrons. We consider a geological structure as a set of foliations joined along faults and unconformities. We propose five kinds of geological data to constrain structural geometry quantitatively: dip measurements that may be available along wells, developability and smoothness of deposition isochrons, the directions of fold axes, and layer parallelism. Using concepts of differential geometry, we formulate these data in terms of least-squares criteria. To solve the canonical non-uniqueness problem raised by the inversion of parametric representations of geometrical objects such as foliations (many parametrizations describe the same object), we introduce the additional criterion method which consists of adding an unphysical objective function to the physical objective function, so as to make the solution unique. Assuming well trajectories and borehole correlations to be known, we optimize, with respect to these criteria, several simple structures comprising one foliation, including a field example.

    Notes: Summary During the autumn of 1987 a survey was carried out in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean in order to study phytoplankton community structure in relation to hydrological features. The positions of the boundary zones, determined by means of hydrological and chemical properties (especially silicic acid) match with previous studies. The phytoplankton community structure was studied by means of algal pigment fingerprints. A cluster analysis of the main phytoplankton pigments revealed the presence of four distinctive phytoplankton communities in the area. In three cluster groups phytoflagellate pigments of different taxonomical groups were found which showed different relative abundance between the cluster groups. In between the Polar Front Zone and the Weddell Scotia Confluence a fourth group was found which was rich in diatoms as compared to the other cluster groups. High concentrations of the fucoxanthin related 19′-hexanoyloxyfucoxanthin indicated the relative importance of Prymnesiophyceae during fall in this area. The relative contribution of each taxonomical group to total phytoplankton biomass was estimated by using specific pigment ratios. This calculation showed that in this time of the year phytoflagellate biomass (especially Prymnesiophytes) surpasses diatom biomass.
