    Description: N-lipidated short peptides and amino acids immobilized on the cellulose were used as catalysts cleaved amide bonds under biomimetic conditions. In order to select catalytically most active derivatives a library of 156 N-lipidated amino acids, dipeptides and tripeptides immobilized on cellulose was obtained. The library was synthesized from serine, histidine and glutamic acid peptides N-acylated with heptanoic, octanoic, hexadecanoic and (E)-octadec-9-enoic acids. Catalytic efficiency was monitored by spectrophotometric determination of p-nitroaniline formed by the hydrolysis of a 0.1 M solution of Z-Leu-NP. The most active 8 structures contained tripeptide fragment with 1-3 serine residues. It has been found that incorporation of metal ions into catalytic pockets increase the activity of the synzymes. The structures of the 17 most active catalysts selected from the library of complexes obtained with Cu2+ ion varied from 16 derivatives complexed with Zn2+ ion. For all of them, a very high reaction rate during the preliminary phase of measurements was followed by a substantial slowdown after 1 h. The catalytic activity gradually diminished after subsequent re-use. HPLC analysis of amide bond splitting confirmed that substrate consumption proceeded in two stages. In the preliminary stage 24–40% of the substrate was rapidly hydrolysed followed by the substantially lower reaction rate. Nevertheless, using the most competent synzymes product of hydrolysis was formed with a yield of 60–83% after 48h under mild and strictly biomimetic conditions.

    Description: During speech acquisition, children form quick and rough hypotheses about the meaning of a new word after only a single exposure-a process dubbed "fast mapping." Here we provide evidence that a border collie, Rico, is able to fast map. Rico knew the labels of over 200 different items. He inferred the names of novel items by exclusion learning and correctly retrieved those items right away as well as 4 weeks after the initial exposure.     Description: Butanol has similar characteristics to gasoline, and could provide an alternative oxygenate to ethanol in blended fuels. Butanol can be produced either via the biotechnological route, using microorganisms such as clostridia, or by the chemical route, using petroleum. Recently, interest has grown in the possibility of catalytic coupling of bioethanol into butanol over various heterogenic systems. This reaction has great potential, and could be a step towards overcoming the disadvantages of bioethanol as a sustainable transportation fuel. This paper summarizes the latest research on butanol synthesis for the production of biofuels in different biotechnological and chemical ways; it also compares potentialities and limitations of these strategies.

    Description: The enantioselective condensing reagent 4,6-dimethoxy-1,3,5-triazine (DMT)/strychnine/BF was obtained by treatment of 2-chloro-4,6-dimethoxy-1,3,5-triazine (CDMT) with strychnine tetrafluoroborate. The reagent was useful under typical conditions of solid-phase peptide synthesis (SPPS) with enantiomerically homogeneous substrates. By SPPS, desired dipeptides were obtained in 84–94% yield using 4 equiv. of racemic Fmoc-Ala, Fmoc-Phe, and/or Fmoc-Tyr for 1 equiv. of Wang resin loaded with Gly, Ala, Leu, Phe, Glu( t Bu), and/or Pro, respectively. For all three Fmoc-protected amino acids, the configuration of the enantiomer preferred under SPPS conditions was independent of the structure of the acylated component and identical to that established in condensations proceeding in solution. In all cases, the enantiomer ratios L / D (er) were in a similar range, and varied from 9 : 92 to 2 : 98 for alanine, and from 90 : 10 to 100 : 0 for aromatic amino acids. The synthesis of Ac- L -Lys(Ac)- D -Ala- D -Ala-OH from racemic Fmoc-Ala gave an L / D ratio of 10 : 90 for the esterification of Wang resin, and 0 : 100 for the formation of peptide bonds.

    Description: 4-(4,6-Dimethoxy-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)-4-methylmorpholinium toluene-4-sulfonate (DMT/NMM/TsO - ), a representative member of the inexpensive and environmentally-friendly N -triazinylammonium family of sulfonates, has been found to be a very effective coupling reagent for the synthesis of amides, esters and peptides in solution. This study confirms the usefulness of DMT/NMM/TsO - for peptide synthesis in solution, starting from Z-, Fmoc- and Boc-protected substrates as well as unnatural building blocks. Peptide synthesis with DMT/NMM/TsO - produced high yields, with high crude product purity and low risk of racemization. In all cases, stoichiometric amounts of reagents were used and the standard synthetic procedure, without the need for time-consuming optimization stages or expensive chromatographic purification. DMT/NMM/TsO - was also found to be very useful for the synthesis of oligopeptides using a fragment coupling strategy. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

    Notes: Standard resistivity configurations lose resolution in regions where multiple geologic layering of high conductivity contrast occurs. To partially circumvent this problem an electrode configuration was used, which includes a current electrode at depth down a drill hole in a water field, to examine the possibility of delineating ground-water flow channels. Results show the value of this technique in enhancing the electrical anomaly and hence determining structure. It was found that the ground water in this area flows primarily in fracture traces in the dolomite. Moreover, it was determined from well log synthesis that these fracture traces increase the effective porosity in the flow region by approximately ten percent.

    Notes: It is shown that the renormalizability of the zero-range interaction in the two-dimensional space is always followed by the existence of a bound state, which is not true for odd-dimensional spaces. A renormalization procedure is defined and the exact retarded Green's function for electrons moving in two dimensions and interacting with both crossed magnetic and electric fields and an attractive zero-range interaction is constructed. Imaginary parts of poles of this Green's function determine lifetimes of quasibound (resonance) states. It is shown that for some particular parameters the stabilization against decay occurs even for strong electric fields. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.
