    Description: ABSTRACT [1]  The igneous evolution of Mars is well-represented in stratigraphic settings that transition across major time-stratigraphic boundaries. Here we analyze in detail the morphology and composition, determined through visible-near infrared spectroscopy, of igneous volcanic terrains in Ares Vallis, Mars. Upland plateau units with crater-filling volcanic plains are of Noachian age; smooth units to the west and north of the mouth of Ares Vallis have been mapped as Hesperian in age. The age and origin of the units that comprise the floor of Ares Vallis, connecting the upland plateau units and the smooth units to the west and north of the mouth of Ares Vallis, is less certain due to the small area available for crater counting. The mafic mineral compositions of these units are well-resolved with OMEGA and CRISM data. The data show the Noachian volcanic units are distinctly olivine-rich while the plains units to the west and the floor of Ares Vallis volcanics show diagnostic absorptions of olivine-pyroxene, typical of Hesperian volcanics elsewhere on Mars. Based on these findings, we propose there has been a change in the temperature and/or degree of partial melting in the mantle over time for this region of Mars.

    Description: Sustainably managing ecosystems is challenging, especially for complex systems such as coral reefs. This study develops critical reference points for sustainable management by using a large empirical dataset on the coral reefs of the western Indian Ocean to investigate associations between levels of target fish biomass (as an indicator of fishing intensity) and eight metrics of ecosystem state. These eight ecological metrics each exhibited specific thresholds along a continuum of fishable biomass ranging from heavily fished sites to old fisheries closures. Three thresholds lay above and five below a hypothesized window of fishable biomass expected to produce a maximum multispecies sustainable yield (BMMSY). Evaluating three management systems in nine countries, we found that unregulated fisheries often operate below the BMMSY, whereas fisheries closures and, less frequently, gear-restricted fisheries were within or above this window. These findings provide tangible management targets for multispecies coral reef fisheries and highlight key tradeoffs required to achieve different fisheries and conservation goals.

    Description: We describe herein the discovery of a series of panaxytriol (PXT)-derived polyacetylene small molecules with promising cytoprotective activity. In mouse xenograft models, we have demonstrated the capacity of our synthetic analogs to mitigate a range of cancer therapeutic agent-induced toxicities, including body weight loss, lethality, neurotoxicity, and hematotoxicity. Our PXT analogs have also been found to reduce radiation-induced body weight loss and lethality in mouse models. Moreover, several PXT analogs appear to exhibit moderate in vivo antiinflammatory activity as well as in vitro immunoenhancing capabilities. These compounds appear to derive their activity through induction of cancer preventive phase 2 enzymes. The studies described herein suggest that coadministration of a PXT-derived agent with cancer chemotherapeutics or radiation therapy may serve to mitigate a range of therapy-associated toxicities.

Das Sarma Weyl semimetals are exotic topological materials that host massless (pseudo)relativistic quasiparticle excitations that mimic Weyl fermions and possess topological surface states, which form a “Fermi arc” and which, it has been argued, are protected against weak interactions and disorder. Recent experiments as, for instance, those on TaAs demonstrate the existence of Weyl semimetals and their exotic surface states. Using high-performance numerics, the authors show that disorder destroys the topological protection of the surface states by promoting hybridization with rare resonances in the bulk. It is shown here that the surface currents resulting from the Fermi arc are remarkably robust, which demonstrates their experimental signatures and technological applicability even in dirty samples.     Notes: Abstract The rhythmicity of intracellular digestion was examined in two sublittoral populations of Ostrea edulis L. On the West coast of Ireland. During 12 h cycles at each station, 20 oysters were collected each hour, grouped as sub-samples of 5, facing each of the 4 cardinal points of the compass. A segment of digestive diverticula from each oyster was examined histologically and classified according to the digestive phases of the tubules. Oysters at both stations exhibited fluctuations in digestive activity which were not correlated with tidal ebb and flow nor with orientation to tidal currents. A relationship between variations in suspended particulate matter concentration in the water body and digestion is proposed. It is suggested that increases in the levels of particulate matter, by stimulating feeding, cause a significant increase in the proportion of absorptive-phase tubules 4 to 6 h later.

    Notes: Abstract Grazing rates and electivity indices of larvae and spat of Ostrea edulis L. were, measured and examined in relation to certain physical parameters using a flow-through system. Retention and size-selection were determined for the major particle sizes present in cultures of Isochrysis galbana Parke, an alga used frequently as food for bivalves. Cultures of the algae Dunaliella tertiolecta Butcher and Phaeodactylum tricornutum Bohlin were used as sources of particle suspensions of various sizes and shapes, respectively. While increases in flow rate caused increased grazing, the mode of selection of I. galbana particles remained constant. Filtration rate, F f was related to body size, W, by the general allometric equation R f =aW b,while particle-size preference in suspensions of I. galbana by both larvae and spat of O. edulis was independent of W. Grazing rates increased with temperature to an optimum temperature, which was related to the acclimation temperature. Increases above this optimum caused a reduction in feeding activity. No significant change in particle size-preference in the I. galbana suspension with temperature was observed. Grazing rates and selection were dependent, however, on particle number and volume. Both larvae and spat displayed maximum retention at optimum particle concentrations which tended to decrease with increasing particle size. Variations in cell shape of P. tricornutum had no measurable effect on selectivity by O. edulis.

    Notes: Summary A deficiency in the activity of uroporphyrinogen decarboxylase (UROD), the fifth enzyme of the haem biosynthetic pathway, is found in familial porphyria cutanea tarda (F-PCT) and hepatoerythropoietic porphyria (HEP). A new mutation (R292G) and a deletion have been found in a pedigree with two HEP patients (two sisters). The R292G mutation was not detected in 13 unrelated affected patients with F-PCT, so it appears to be uncommon. The possibility that the arginine 292 may participate at the active site of the enzyme is discussed. A summary of the 7 mutations/deletions found in the UROD gene with their frequency is presented.
