    Notes: Abstract The present communication reports the effect of a softening treatment carried out with 18% NaOH on the fine structure and structure-property relations in coir fibres. The effect of successive removal of lignin and hemicelluloses on the fine structure has also been studied. Unlike other cellulosic fibres, alkali treatment failed to produce any increase in fibre elongation in coir. However, the spiral structure was found to be considerably modified by swelling. X-ray and infrared spectral measurements revealed that a part of the noncellulosic components does occupy the intracellular space and plays a significant role on fine structural changes produced during the alkali treatment.

    Notes: This report summarizes the observations made on the dyeing behavior of highly decrystallized cotton fibers obtained by partial acethylation and cyanoethylation of NaOH swollen fibers. The dyeing studies were also carried out after crosslinking these decrystallized samples. A purified direct dyeing Chlorazol Sky-Blue FF, has been used for the studies. It is observed that partially cyanoethylated and acetylated celluloses show a dye uptake of more than twice that of the corresponding swollen controls even for low degrees of substitution such as about 5.0% acetyl content for the acetylated fibers and 1.0% nitrogen content for the cyanoethylated fiber. On crosslinking also the trend in the dye uptake pattern remained the same, thought the actual amount of dye the fibers could adsorb was markedly reduced. The swollen, substituted, and crosslinked fibers showed a better uniformity of appearance than the swollen and crosslinked fibers.

    Notes: A theory has been developed for the average bending deformation of fibers in an assembly subjected to compression. It is shown that the maximum average bending deformation of the fibers does not exceed 17°, implying that the method of bulk resilience cannot be used as an indicator of elastic recovery of fibers for any precision measurements.

    Notes: Spectacular changes in structure and properties of cotton have been found to result from swelling and stretching treatments in water. Fibers from one variety of cotton (Sudan) were swollen in water and stretched to their limit. While one lot was dried in the stretched state, another was allowed to dry in the slack condition after being subjected to stretch. The two types of treatments produced considerable changes in structural and physical properties, the stretch drying being more drastic. Enhancement of breaking load and tenacity without much loss in extensibility improved fibrillar orientation without change in crystallinity; reduction in ribbon width wall thickness and number of convolutions, etc. are some of the changes resulting from the treatment

    Notes: The details of an infrared technique standardized to analyze cotton-polyester blends of different compositions are reported. It is observed that particle size plays a very important role in the peak intensity of the 1725 cm-1 band (C=O stretching) in polyester, the absorption band recommended for analysis of cotton-polyester blends. However, the product of the band width and peak intensity is found to be dependent on particle size to a lesser extent and hence is a more reliable parameter in the measurement of percentage composition. It has further been shown that the method of sample preparation can affect the band width and hence the results. A suitable sample preparation procedure is, therefore, described whereby an accuracy of ±3% in the estimation of polyester content in a given blend can be achieved.

    Notes: An infrared method is described for the analysis of wool/cotton blends. The method employs the absorption peak of wool at 1520 cm-1 and that of cotton at 1160 cm-1 simultaneously to get a reliable accuracy greater than ±3% in the determination of blend composition in the analysis of actual blends.

    Notes: The physical, structural, and mechanical properties of decrystallized cotton fibers prepared by preswelling in different concentrations of alkali followed by partial substitution - to nearly the same extent irrespective of the preswelling alkali concentration - by acetylation or cyanoethylation have been compared. The decrystallized fibers have been crosslinked with dimethylol dihydroxy ethylene urea (DMDHEU), along with the swollen controls, and the mechanical properties have been measured on these samples. It was found that preswelling in NaOH solution of lower concentration (12-15%) prior to cyancethylation results in better decrystallized fibers which also possess better strength uniformity, whereas a higher concentration of NaOH (15% or above) is necessary for acetylation to obtain fibers with nearly similar characteristics. On crosslinking, the swollen and substituted fibers show a better strength retention and a higher strength uniformity than the swollen control, for the same degree of crosslinking.

    Notes: This paper presents some experimental data on inverse relaxation exhibited by yarns spun from cotton, polyester, viscose rayon, and jute fibers. Inverse relaxation (IR) is the building up of tension in a viscoelastic material that has been allowed to recover a part of the initial extension it is subjected to. The IR index defined as a measure of the extent of this property has been determined at various levels of extension. A qualitative explanation of the results based on the fiber model proposed by Vitkauskas and Matukonis is also given.
