Lorsque l'échantillon de nourriture est grand, des soldats sont aussi recrutés, et sont capables de protéger la nourriture contre des espèces compétitrices, ou même de les évincer. 3. Il n'y a pas de différence dans le taux de recrutement des ouvrières selon que la source de nourriture se présente en masse compacte ou qu'elle est dispersée. Cependant, un plus grand nombre d'ouvrières ont tendance à s'accumuler sur les sources de nourriture compactes. 4. Par comparaison avec les sources de nourriture dispersées, davantage de soldats sont attirés par les sources de nourriture compactes. 5. L'existence d'un approvisionnement de masse et d'un recrutement de soldats apparaît comme des adaptations qui compensent le coût entraîné par les systèmes de recrutement des ouvrières.
    Notes: Summary 1. Pheidole fallax is a common Jamaican ant that is capable of retrieving large whole food items. 2. When the food item is large, soldiers are also recruited and are capable of protecting the food against competitors or even displacing competitors. 3. There is no difference in worker recruitment rate to clumped or dispersed food sources. However, more workers do tend to accumulate at the clumped resource. 4. In comparison to the dispersed food source, more soldiers are attracted to the clumped resource. 5. The use of mass food retrieval and soldier recruitment appears to be useful adaptations that compensate for the costs associated with worker recruitment systems.

    Notes: Much less is known about the behaviour of female beaugregory damselfish than about males of the species. This study was initiated to determine behavioural patterns and interactions of female beaugregories on the back reef of Discovery Bay Marine Laboratory, North shore of Jamaica. Females fed, patrolled, and chased intruders in a significantly larger area and ate significantly more per 15-min observation period than did males. Males spent significantly more time patrolling their territories and chased significantly more total intruders than did females. However, this difference in total chases comes from the fact that males chased the bluehead wrasse, an egg predator, significantly more often than did females while all other species of intruder were chased the same by both sexes. The distance that females travelled from their homesite to court was significantly positively correlated to female body length. This increased distance travelled may relate to mate assessment. Female beaugregory damselfish may be able to be more selective in their choice of mate with increased size and distance travelled.

    Notes: On six separate occasions during a two month period, there were no significant differences in mean attack distances by territorial male beaugregory damselfish Stregastes leucostictus against male conspecifics, bluehead wrasse Thalassoma bifasciatus and striped parrotfish Scarus iserti. Feeding areas and patrolling areas were typically smaller than attack distances. The presence or absence of eggs, or the quantity of eggs within the male's territory also was not significantly correlated with attack distances. © 2000 The Fisheries Society of the British Isles

    Notes: Contests between matched pairs of sexually mature convict cichlids Archocentrus nigrofasciatus were staged to determine if size alone affected the ways in which the males fought. Both small and large contests began with a period of visual displays. As fights progressed, displays diminished, and were replaced by more escalated behaviours. Small and large contests were also of similar duration. Despite these consistencies with sequential assessment, large and small contests were not entirely alike. For example, large males engaged in more lateral displays and were slower to escalate than small males. Small males displayed less and escalated to biting sooner than large males. Two possible explanations are suggested for these contrasts in contest structure: absolute opponent size and differences in the males’ ages coupled with differences in experience.

    Notes: A significant decline was found in the quantity of eggs that polygynous male beaugregory damselfish Stegastes leucosticus received after reducing the number of available females, which indicated that a significant number of females was removed from the experimental community. The operational sex ratio (OSR) hypothesis, which presumes that a sex becomes increasingly more selective as the number of alternative mates increases, was not supported as the variance in male mating success was unchanged after the females were removed. The relative mating success among males was also unchanged. That is, male ranks remained relatively the same (pre-test and post-test) after the removal of females. The large variance in male mating success within this species may be a function of polymorphic mate preferences exhibited by females that may be based on male location.

    Notes: Abstract Male beaugregory damselfish (Stegastes leucostictus) spent more time courting larger females in both two-choice and single presentations. Female size was significantly correlated with gonad weight. We also verified that female fecundity was extremely variable within a natural population. We found that male reproductive success was highly correlated with both clutch size and clutch number. However, clutch size was not significantly correlated with clutch number, indicating that males that received larger clutches did not receive more egg clutches. Furthermore, there was no difference between the number of offspring produced by males that mated with the largest females and by males that mated with the most females. Thus, although males preferred larger females, males produced similar numbers of offspring by mating with large females or mating with many females.

    Notes: Working within the restrictions of a model, we have calculated the circular dichroism of the dinucleoside phosphates ApA, CpC, and CpA for various conformations. Comparing the calculated curves with those measured in aqueous solution we find agreement for (1) ApA as a right-handed helix with both bases either as in B-form DNA, or else rotated 180° around the glycosidic bond, (2) CpC as the right-handed conformation with both bases as in DNA, (3) ApC as either the right-handed conformation with both bases as in DNA, or else as a left-handed helix with both bases rotated 180°, and (4) CpA as either a left-handed helix with both bases in a left-handed DNA, or else in the right-handed conformation with both bases rotated 180°. In addition, we have investigated circular dichroism as a measure of unstacking. We find that opening the bases to a 90° total angle (base planes perpendicular) reduces the intensity of the calculated bands to 20% of their original value. Further, we find that allowing the sliding of one base past the other does not lead to a temperature dependence consistent with experiment.
