Notes: Tin(IV) oxide (SnO2) crystallizes at room temperature by adding hydrazine monohydrate ((NH2)2· H2O) to a hydrochloric acid solution of tin, followed by washing and drying. Well-densified SnO2 ceramics (99.8% of theoretical) with an average grain size of 0.9 μm have been fabricated by hot isostatic pressing for 2 h at 900°C and 196 MPa. Their Vickers hardness and bending strength are 14.4 GPa and 200 MPa, respectively. They exhibit an electrical conductivity of 2 × 10−3−9 × 10−3 S·cm−1 at room temperature.

Notes: Dielectric depression and dispersion were observed in BaTiO3 ceramic films fabricated by electrophoretic deposition followed by sintering. The dielectric constants were depressed down to 6800-4600 around the Curie point (TC). The dielectric dispersion occurred above TC. These dielectric properties are attributable to a surface layer formed during sintering. XRD analysis indicated that the surface layer was a hexagonal-like BaTiO3 phase. A mixed solvent of acetylacetone and alcohol employed in the present work may have been responsible for the formation of the surface layer.

Notes: Abstract The changes of mechanical properties of chloroprene rubber, used as a jacket material for electric cables in nuclear power generating stations, were investigated under various deterioration environments. The heat resistant properties of the rubber material were measured at various temperatures using a stress relaxation method. From the view point of stress-strain behaviour and chemorheology, the addition of antioxidant and/or antirad reagent to the rubber improves the resistance to heat and/or radiation, respectively. The effects of dose-rate and surrounding atmosphere on the mechanical properties of rubber under radiation were also studied. The radiation damage of rubber was accelerated remarkably under a pressure of 90 atm of air. A vibration fatigue test under heat and radiation was also performed.

Notes: Abstract The prenatal diagnosis of peroxisomal d-3-hydroxyacyl-coenzyme A (CoA) dehydratase/ d-3-hydro-xyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase bifunctional protein (d-BP) deficiency was performed by peroxisomal β-oxidation assay, indirect immunofluorescence staining, immunoblot analysis, and gene analysis of cultured amniocytes obtained from a fetus at 16 weeks' gestational age. β-Oxidation activity, measured by [1-14C] lignoceric acid oxidation, was markedly decreased compared with the controls. Large peroxisomes were readily identified by immunofluorescence staining with anti-human catalase, as was found in the reported patients. Immunoreactive d-BP material was absent on immunoblot analysis and immunofluorescence staining with anti-human d-BP. Reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis revealed the presence of the same 237-bp deletion in the cDNA as that detected in a sibling (the proband). The autopsied fetus showed the characteristic facial appearance and d-BP was deficient on immunoblot and immunohistopathological studies of the fetal tissues. No neuronal migration disorder was identified. This seems to be the first prenatal diagnosis of d-BP deficiency.

Notes: The emulsion copolymerization of ethylene with hexafluoropropylene was studied by using 60Co γ-radiation as the initiator. The apparent rate of copolymerization is proportional to the 1.6 power of ethylene fugacity. The activation volume was calculated from the pressure dependence of the apparent rate constant of copolymerization and was -30 ml/mole, which is smaller than the value reported by Wada et al. for ethylene polymerization in tert-butyl alcohol. The copolymer produced had a broad composition from ethylene-rich to alternative. As expected, the former was a crystalline, polyethylenelike copolymer, but the latter was an amorphous and rubberlike copolymer. The glass transition temperature of the copolymers increased with an increase in hexafluoropropylene content. The thermal degradation temperature in an atmosphere of nitrogen decreased slightly with introduction of hexafluoropropylene in polyethylene, but the thermal degradation behavior in air was complicated by the introduction of hexafluoropropylene.

Notes: Radiation-induced emulsion copolymerization of tetrafluoroethylene with propylene was carried out by batch operation with an initial molar ratio of tetrafluoroethylene to propylene of 3.0 in the emulsifier concentration range of 0.1 to 3.0% and in the dose rate range of 2 × 104 to 2 × 105 R/hr. The effects of emulsifier concentration and dose rate on the polymerization rate and the number-average degree of polymerization are discussed in comparison with the Smith-Ewart theory. The polymerization rate is proportional to the 0.26 power of emulsifier concentration and to the 0.7 power of dose rate. The degree of polymerization is independent of the emulsifier concentration and the dose rate above the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of the emulsifier. These results are not in agreement with the Smith-Ewart theory. It is explained that the termination reaction is a degradative chain transfer of propagating radicals to propylene. On the other hand, the copolymerization in emulsion occurs either below the CMC or in the absence of emulsifier. Under these conditions, however, it is impossible to obtain a copolymer of high molecular weight at a high rate of polymerization because of the presence of a small number of polymer particles formed and the short interval of chain growth in the polymer particle.

Notes: Seeded copolymerization of teterafluoroethylene with propylene by radiation was studied by semibatch experiment at a constant pressure of 25 kg/cm2, a temperature of 40°C, and at various dose rates and monomer compositions in polymer particles. The polymerization rate and polymer molecular weight are in the ranges of 5.6-58.7 g/h.L-H2O and 4.6 × 104-1.6 × 105, respectively. The polymerization rate increases with agitation speed up to 300 rpm and slightly decreases above 500 rpm. The polymer molecular weight is the highest at 300 rpm. The polymerization rate and polymer molecular weight increase with tetrafluoroethylene fraction. At lower tetrafluoroethylene fraction, the polymerization rate is proportional to the 0.7-0.9 power of the dose rate and the polymer molecular weight is almost independent. The dose rate effects are explained by considering that first-order termination by degradative chain transfer to propylene is predominant at a lower tetrafluoroethylene fraction. Decrease in the dose rate dependence of the polymerization rate and increase in that of the polymer molecular weight with the tetrafluoroethylene fraction are due to the increase in second-order termination by recombination.
