Notes: Abstract The reaction of benzoyl and salicoylhydrazones of vanilline, furfural, and cinnamaldehyde with some divalent metal ions of the first transition series is investigated. The structure of the ligand in the solid chelates is studied by IR-spectrophotometry which showed that the ligand is coordinated to the central metal ion through the oxygen atom of the C=O and nitrogen atom of the C=N group. Spectrophotometric, and conductometric studies were carried out to investigate the stoichiometry of the complexes under consideration. The shifts in the C=O and C=N IR-bands are utilised for the determination of the coordination bond length.

Notes: Abstract The metal chelates formed by the reaction of Co2+, Cu2+, Ni2+, Zn2+, and Cd2+ with malonic hydrazide and its arylidene derivatives are investigated. The i.r.-absorption spectra of the solid compounds supported the tetradentate character of these compounds; they also show that the ligand still attained the keto form. The shift of the C=O, C=N bands is utilized in determining the coordination bond length. The stoichiometry of the metal complexes, as studied by spectrophotometric and conductometric methods, is found to be metal ion: ligand =1∶1. The apparent formation constants of the malonic hydrazide complexes are also determined.

Notes: Abstract The polarographic behaviour of pholoxin and rose-bengal is studied in solutions of varying pH. The effect of pH and organic solvents is explained. The waves observed are ascribed to the reduction of the furan and pyrone rings of phloxin at pH≤8 and rose-bengal at pH 4–11. The nature of the waves and the electrode reaction are also investigated. The kinetic parameters are as well determined and discussed.

Notes: Abstract The polarographic reduction of phenol red, chlorophenol red and bromophenol red has been investigated in buffered aqueous solutions and alcohol-water water mixtures over a widepH range (2–12). The results show that the three depolarizers are reduced through two irreversible one-electron waves of equal heights at allpH values. The two waves represent the reduction of the triphenylmethane carbon centre. The nature of the waves and the kinetics of the electrode reaction are discussed.

Notes: Abstract The heterogeneous catalytic conversion ofn-pentanol to dialkylether was carried out using untreated cation-exchanged montmorillonites and using samples which had been preheated at 300°C in an atmosphere of air, hydrogen or nitrogen. The catalyst has been characterized by applying thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction and cation exchange capacity tests. Gas-chromatographic analysis of the products showed that the catalytic reactivity of the exchanged montmorillonite is related to the cation radius. The catalytic conversion ofn-pentanol by organometallic complexes of either Al3+/Fe3+-montmorillonites with benzidine has been doubled compared with the catalytic conversion in the absence of benzidine. This may be attributed to the catalytic effect of benzidinium mono- or di-radical cations that enhance the conversion ofn-pentanol to alkene.

Notes: Abstract The complexes of Co(II) and Ni(II) with nitroso-R-salt are studied by conductometric titration and spectrophotometric methods in buffer solutions of differentpH. The study proved the possible formation of (1∶1), (1∶2) and (1∶3) complexes for Co(II) while Ni(II) forms (1∶1) and (1∶2) complexes (metal:ligand) only. The factors affecting complex formation are established and the formation constants of the complexes are evaluated. The ir spectra of the solid complexes with α-nitroso-β-naphthol revealed that the ligand exhibits the nitrosophenol structure and that the reaction takes place through proton displacement from the OH-group.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung.
Notes: Summary.  The Cu(II) chelates of some new arylidene derivatives of benzilic hydrazide have been synthesized and were characterized by elemental and thermal analyses, as well as by IR, UV/Vis, ESR, and X-ray spectroscopy. The data revealed the formation of tetrahedral 1:1 (L :M) and square planar 2:1 and 1:2 complexes. In the 1:1 complexes, the organic compounds behave as dibasic tridentate ligands towards the Cu(II) ion, whereas in the 1:2 or 2:1 complexes they behave as monobasic bidentate substituents.

Notes: Summary Reduction of CuII in 0.5 M NaOH containing triethanolamine proceeds irreversibly. A similar behaviour is observed in acetate buffer of pH 6. A reversible wave is obtained in (NH4)2CO3 containing EDTA. The diffusion current measured at the proper voltage is proportional to the CuII concentration within a wide range. The waves in 0.5 M NaOH are not well developed being better in acetate buffer and in the presence of EDTA. Ammoniacal solutions containing EDTA can be utilised for the simultaneous estimation of FeIII and CuII. A mixture of FeIII, CuII and UVI can be fairly well analysed in a medium of (NH4)2CO3 containing EDTA.
