An electrically tunable optical filter using a LiNbO3 torsional actuator with a Fabry–Perot solid etalon is proposed for use in wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) optical communication systems. The Fabry–Perot solid etalon acts as an optical filter, while a LiNbO3 plate of particular orientation with a ferroelectric inversion layer acts as a torsional actuator with no hysteresis. This enables the actuator to precisely rotate the Fabry–Perot etalon and thereby tune the center wavelength of the filter by application of a voltage. Such a tunable optical filter for the 1310 nm wavelength region fabricated using a 0.1 mm thick etalon is demonstrated to have a tunable range of 3 nm and a 3 dB bandwidth (FWHM) of 0.16∼0.26 nm for an applied voltage of +500 to −500 V. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
