The reactions of NiO single crystals with Cl2 and HCl gas has been investigated at conditions (10-20 Torr, 500-900°C) under which NiCl2 is in the gaseous state. Both reactions have higher activation energies on Cr-doped NiO and lower ones on Li doping; doping with Mg has no effect. The interaction with Cl2 has zero-order kinetics, with oxygen desorption as the rate-determinig step. The chlorination by HCl proceeds with reaction order 1/2, the formation of OH surface groups on NiO being probably the slowest step. All NiO samples showed p-conductivity, with parallel trends in the variation of the FERMI potential and activation energy.

Die Reaktionen von Nickeloxid-Einkristallen mit Chlor und Chlorwasserstoff wurden unter Bedingungen, bei denen das gebildete Nickelchlorid gasförmig vorliegt (10-20 Torr, 500-900°C), untersucht. Bei beiden Reationen tritt eine Erhöhung der Aktivierungsenergie durch Dotierung des Nickeloxids mit Chrom und eine Erniedrigung durch Lithium-Dotierung ein, während Magnesium-Dotierung ohne Einfluß ist.Die Umsetzung mit Chlor verläuft nach nullter Ordnung mit geschwindigkeitsbestimmender Sauerstoffdesorption. Die Chlorierung durch Chlorwasserstoff erfolgt nach der Reaktionsordnung 1/2, wobei vermutlich die Bildung von OH-Gruppen an der Nickeloxid-Oberfläche der langsamste Schritt ist.Alle untersuchten Nickeloxidproben besitzen p-Leitfähigkeit, die bei konstanter Temperatur vom höchsten Li-Gehalt über undotierte Proben bis zum höchsten Cr-Gehalt monoton abnimmt. In umgekehrter Richtung ändert sich die Lage des FERMI-Niveaus. Die Änderungen der Aktivierungsenergie gehen also mit denen des FERMI-Potentials symbat.
