The magnetic flux threading a general pickup coil system is expressed as a power series expansion in which the source and detector dependencies are separated. Specific expressions are developed for the commonest coil system—a single circular coil. For a given configuration, the maximum error is simply related to the number of terms retained in the expansion. Actual computations show that, for a single circular coil, and for configurations typically encountered in biomagnetic studies, the power series expansion method is about 20 times faster than direct integration of the vector potential over the coil perimeter.
