Notizen: Summary A wood fibre cell from a Tasmanian Eucalypt is typically cylindrical in shape with a length to diameter ratio of approximately 50∶1. Early in the process of seasoning for solid timber, when the fibre lumens are still saturated, internal tension within a fibre can rise to a value high enough to cause it to physically flatten, or collapse. A stress model of a fibre cell has been developed which predicts the stress and strain distributions within the fibre wall as a function of temperature, moisture content, and fibre wall strength properties and size in the early stages of drying. This model will be used together with measurement of the behaviour of collapse prone timbers to determine conditions which will avoid collapse during seasoning.

Notizen: Summary When surface checks form in karri (Eucalyptus diversicolor F. Muell), they almost invariably do so in the bottoms of vessels exposed on the surfaces of the boards. It is postulated that the vessels act as stress raisers, and thus surface checks form at lower values of average surface stress and strain than they would otherwise. Surface checks were seen to form at acoustic emission levels approximately one-third of those corresponding to surface check formation in other eucalypts. Analytical and finite element stress analysis techniques suggested a stress concentration factor at the bottoms of the vessels of approximately three. A trial drying of karri showed a close correlation between predicted surface instantaneous strain using the stress concentration factor found from the stress analysis in a model of drying timber, and measured acoustic emissions.

Notizen: Summary Tangential shrinkage was measured on longitudinal-tangential slices of separate earlywood and latewood from one board of Eucalyptus regnans F.Muell. at various temperatures. Large amounts of collapse shrinkage were measured in the latewood slices, and lesser amounts in the earlywood slices. Collapse shrinkage in the earlywood was found only when the slices were dried at temperatures above a minimum temperature (the “collapse threshold temperature”). End-coated board sections approximately 200 mm long were rapidly dried at dry-bulb temperatures below the collapse threshold temperature for earlywood. Incipient internal checks were found in the latewood of these boards. Board sections dried at higher temperatures showed internal checks starting in both early and latewood. A non-linear drying simulation model was modified to take the heterogeneous nature of wood into account. This model predicted that internal checks would form in this wood even if it were dried sufficiently slowly to avoid surface checking.

Notizen: Abstract A new method for determining the seasonability of timber in the log has been developed. This will allow batch processing of wood with similar seasonability characteristics to minimise drying time and drying induced degrade. The method involves cutting a 12 mm diameter core longitudinally from the end of the log, drying it under fixed conditions for 24 h, and then oven drying it. The only measurements made are three weighings of the core, and a visual inspection of the core surface. Comparison with a non-linear stress and drying model of the 24 h core drying process yields sufficient information to calculate a seasonability grade for the log.
