Notes: Summary The magnetohydrodynamic free convection flow of an electrically conducting fluid past a vertical, semi-infinite plate in a strong cross field has been examined when a uniform heat flux is present at the plate. Formulation in terms of a characteristic length has enabled a full numerical solution to be obtained providing details of skin friction and heat transfer at all stations along the plate for a range of Prandtl numbers appropriate to liquid metal coolants. Series solutions are also presented which give good estimates of the skin friction and heat transfer coefficients.

Notes: Summary The unsteady natural convection flow about a horizontal circular cylinder at whose surface the heat flux is constant is considered. A numerical solution of the equations valid in the vicinity of the uppermost generator of the cylinder displays singular behaviour after a finite time. It is demonstrated that the breakdown of the solution is consistent with a triple layer structure characterised by an inertia dominated central region.

Notes: A numerical code has been implemented for the numerical solution of the steady, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations using primitive variables in a bifurcating channel. A boundary-fitted, numerically generated grid is placed onto the domain of the channel which is transformed into either a rectilinear C- or T-shaped region. The differenced equations are solved using Newton's iteration which makes upwinding at high Reynolds number unnecessary. Practical implications of inverting the huge Jacobian matrix of Newton's method are discussed. The results have relative error of 2-3 × 10-3 at Reynolds number 100, with T-geometry being marginally but significantly more accurate than C-geometry. Results have been obtained for Reynolds numbers up to 1000 for three bifurcations one of which models the carotid arterial bifurcation in the human head. For this latter bifurcation the wall shear stress is calculated in connection with the onset of atherosclerosis. Finally, the results of flows having different daughter tube end pressures are presented.

Notes: The numerical solution of the flow in a stepped channel constricted to half its width has been obtained for Reynolds numbers up to 2000 using Newton's iteration to solve the ensuing algebraic system. In order to avoid high-frequency errors, a locally fine grid is effected near the corner by transformation of the independent variables. The results predict a downstream recirculation region, observed in experiments but not found in earlier numerical calculations. The inclusion of the Dennis-Hudson upwinding, added for stability in SOR methods, whilst giving the same characteristics of the flow, is less accurate by at least an order of magnitude.

Notes: The numerical solution of the thin film flow surrounding a horizontal cylinder resulting from a single vertical cylindrical jet is obtained. This is effected by transforming the domain of the flow, which contains a free surface, onto a rectangular parallelepiped and using a marching strategy to solve the ensuing parabolic equations. The flow terminates at a finite distance along the cylinder, its position depending on the velocity and mass flux of the jet. A comparison with the usual two-dimensional model in which the jet is replaced by a vertical sheet shows that such a representation is valid provided the overall width of the flow is not too large. In particular, the differences in heat transfer characteristics amount to a few per cent, thus validating the use of the two-dimensional model when applied to heat exchanger tubes. A comparison with the more usual multicolumn case is also considered.

Notes: An embedding method is considered for the numerical determination of the cathode shape for a given anode shape in a two-dimensional electrolytic cell. Reference is made to an analytic solution to illustrate the difficulties which have to be overcome by any numerical method applied to this ill-posed problem. The embedding method searches amongst the direct solutions (i.e. anodes for given cathodes) since these, resulting from a well-posed problem, are less troublesome to compute. For anodes of the form βG(x), x the transverse direction, the embedding method gives good results for β less than 30-60 percent of the β for which the cathode first contains cusps or becomes triple-valued. It is shown that the embedding method performs better than some other numerical methods in overcoming the error growth difficulties associated with the illposedness of the problem.

Description: The boundary-layer equations of mixed convection are examined in the vicinity of separation. The correlation between the uniform wall temperature case and that of compressible boundary layer flow is outlined. Goldstein–Stewartson–Buckmaster theory is thus appropriate and associated indeterminacies in the theory are evaluated from a numerical integration. The case of uniform heat flux at the wall is then examined theoretically. Significantly it is concluded that the original Goldstein–Stewartson theory is sufficient to describe the structure of the singularity at separation in this case. Indeterminacies associated with the theory are determined via a reconciliation between analytical and numerical representation of skin friction and heat transfer coefficients near separation. © 1980, Cambridge University Press.
