    Collective Actions and Leadership Attributes: A Cluster Analysis of Water User Associations in Chile (2022)

    Description: Good leaders can greatly influence the effective governance of water resources, however, how their attributes relate to group cooperation in Water User Associations (WUAs) remains an open question. Using the case of Chile, we explore the factors of three non-cooperative behaviors in WUAs by performing a two-stage cluster analysis. The results describe four clusters that differ in structural and human characteristics, where highly cooperative WUAs are characterized by having presidents who dedicate more time to their duties, are more active in applying for governmental subsidies, are embedded in social organizations, have high levels of bridging social capital, and have a positive attitude toward the presidency. Our results add to the limited empirical knowledge about the role of leadership in fostering cooperation in the use of common-pool resources. This article sheds light on this matter as the results suggest that policy interventions should aim at strengthening social capital and providing incentives to increase the time dedication of presidents to the WUAs duties.

    A systematic review highlights that there are multiple benefits of urban agriculture besides food (2023)

    Description: Urban agriculture, including peri-urban farming, can nourish around one billion city dwellers and provide multiple social, economic, and environmental benefits. However, these benefits depend on various factors and are debated. Therefore, we used machine learning to semi-automate a systematic review of the existing literature on urban agriculture. It started with around 76,000 records for initial screening based on a broad keyword search strategy. We applied the topic modeling approach to systematically understand various aspects of urban agriculture based on the full text of around 1450 relevant publications. Urban agriculture literature covers 14 topics, clustered into 11 themes related to urban agriculture forms, their multi-functionalities, and their underlying challenges. These forms are small-scale ground-based and building-integrated systems. The multifunctionalities include food, livelihoods, health benefits, social space, green infrastructure, biodiversity, and ecosystem services. Therefore, promoting urban agriculture requires accounting for its multi-functionalities, besides food provisioning,and encouraging efficient and sustainable practices.

    The Importance of Analyzing Interdependencies to Build a Healthy, Nature-Positive, and Inclusive Food System (2022)

    Description: Many technological and behavioral measures have been proposed to transition the food system to be healthier, nature-positive, and inclusive. In targeting one specific sustainability goal, these measures often have positive or negative side-effects on the other sustainability targets. Global integrated assessment models (IAMs) of the food and land system are often used to assess the quantitative direction and magnitude of these side-effects. Within this brief, we synthesize the findings of multiple analyses using the land system model MAgPIE to study the effects and side-effects of different measures taken within the land system, such as improving agricultural productivity, land-sparing for biodiversity protection, bioenergy cultivation, and changing food consumption patterns. We find that side-effects of measures are widespread and often impact multiple SDGs. We conclude that measures must be bundled to achieve a sustainable outcome; due to their interrelatedness, any implemented measure should be accompanied by as many measures as there are sustainability targets that are affected by side-effects. While we found large literature on the impact of measures, their side-effects, and their allocative efficiency, we identified few studies that also considered the policies that would lead to the implementation of these measures. This research gap warrants more research, because the type of policy instrument has a major effect on the distributional outcomes and likelihood of success.
