Notes: Summary The problem of inviscid supersonic/hypersonic flow over the expansion surface of an oscillating flat plate at an angle of attack is studied. The amplitude and reduced frequency of the oscillation are assumed small and the unsteady flow regarded as a small perturbation to the steady Prandtl-Meyer flow. By imposing appropriate upstream boundary conditions the perturbation problem is properly formulateds and solved analytically. The solution, together with the known oscillating wedge solution of Hui, is used to study the aerodynamic stability of a flat plate. In particular, it is found that for large enough angles of attack the pitching motion of a flat plate is aerodynamically unstable, and that at high angles of attack the specific heat ratio of the gas has very significant effects and can cause aerodynamic instability.

Notes: Abstract This paper studies the two-dimensional incompressible viscous flow in which the local vorticity is proportional to the stream function perturbed by a uniform stream. It was known by Taylor and Kovasznay that the Navier-Stokes equations for flow of this kind become linear. From the general solution to the linear equations for steady flow, we show that there exist only two types of steady flow of this kind: Kovasznay downstream flow of a two-dimensional grid and Lin and Tobak reversed flow about a flat plate with suction. In the unsteady flow case, new classes of exact analytical solutions are found which include Taylor vortex array solution as a special case. It is shown that these unsteady flows are, as viewed from a frame of reference moving with the undisturbed uniform stream, pseudo-steady in the sense that the flow pattern is steady but the magnitude of motion decays, or grows, exponentially in time. All these solutions are valid for any Reynolds number.

Notes: Abstract A general theory of the wavemaker is presented based on a recent formulation of the water wave equations by Hui and Tenti. It exploits the fact that the free surface is a surface of constant pressure in order to make the surface boundary conditions linear and to be evaluated at a fixed boundary. The main features of the present theory are as follows: First, it applies to any weakly nonlinear wavemaker. Second, the full initial-boundary value problem is solved, thus including the transient effects in contrast to the classical approaches. Third, the finite amplitude (weakly nonlinear) effects are explicitly calculated. Finally, it is notable from a mathematical standpoint that the complicated second-order problem can be transformed to the form of the linear problem, and can therefore be solved by identical techniques.
