Summary Following some introductory remarks on the need for thinking about new defense strategies, typical results of formal military conflict models are analyzed in order to demonstrate the structural prerequesites of conventional forces for bringing about crisis stability in Europe without nuclear weapons. There would be military as well as economic incentives to meet these prerequisites if the so-called “defense efficiency hypothesis” could be validated. To this end, the results of a series of simulation experiments are discussed. In conclusion, possible models of conventional transarmament are considered illustrating the need for linking conventional and nuclear arms control negotiations.
Notes:
