    Description: IODP Site U1501 (18°53.09′N, 115°45.95′E, water depth: 2846 m) is situated on the west side of Pearl River Canyon. The length for hole C at IODP Site U1501 is up to 461.8 m, covering the last 40 Ma (Jian et al., 2018; Ma et al., 2019). 31 samples were selected at 20 cm intervals from the interval from 92.86 to 99.29 m, which spans from 5.2-5.8 Ma (Jian et al., 2018). All 31 samples of IODP Site U1501 are analyzed by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission (ICP-OES) to acquire the major elemental contents in Peking University during June 2021. We use the major element data to calculate the provenance proxies (Hu et al., 2021), then further discuss the change of Taiwan input during the late Miocene.

    Description: The source-to-sink system of the northern South China Sea (SCS) has been widely discussed during the past few decades, but little is known about the transport processes and the controlling mechanisms on different spatiotemporal scales. Here, we study the spatiotemporal changes in sediment depositional patterns on the northern SCS continental slope since 150 ka using major element, clay mineralogy and grain size data from four sediment sites. Although the changes in major element composition are strongly related to mineral content variations, few studies have focused on the relationship between element compositions and provenance changes. We presents the major element compositions from three sites that cover the full depth range of the northern South China Sea slope. The results indicate that the most significant control on element composition is provenance change. Elemental and mineral contents are used to reconstruct the spatiotemporal patterns of sediment deposition over the last 150 kyr. And we infer that the ocean currents, bathymetry, sea level and monsoon control sediment depositional processes here on different spatiotemporal scales.

    Description: The relationship between planktonic and benthic foraminiferal stable-isotope values and oceanographic conditions and factors controlling isotopic variations are discussed on the basis of oxygen and carbon isotopic analyses of 192 modern surface and Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) samples from the South China Sea (SCS). The harmonic variation of benthic delta18O in surface sediments with water depth and temperature implies that the temperature is the main factor influencing benthic delta18O variations. Planktonic delta18O fluctuates with sea surface temperature (SST) and salinity (SSS). The N-S temperature gradient results in planktonic delta18O decreasing from the northeast to the south. Cool, saline waters driven by the winter monsoon are interpreted to have been responsible for the high delta18O values in the northeast SCS. The East Asian monsoons not only bring nutrients into the South China Sea and maintain high nutrient concentration levels at the southwestern and northeastern ends, which cause depleted delta13C both in planktonic (surface) and benthic (bottom) samples but also reduce planktonic/benthic delta18O differences. The distribution of delta18O and delta13C in the surface and LGM samples are strikingly similar, indicating that the impact of SST and SSS has been maintained, and nutrient inputs, mainly from the northeastern and southwestern ends, have been controlled by monsoons since the LGM. Comparisons of the modern and LGM delta18O indicate a difference of about 3.6 °C in bottom-water temperature and a large surface-to-bottom temperature gradient during the LGM as compared to today.
