Notes: Abstract This paper sets out the implications of using pupil-pupil discussion within mathematics classrooms and describes the different ways that such discussion might promote mathematical understanding. It distinguishes the following aspects of a discussion: the organisation and articulation of one's own ideas for oneself; the elaboration of one's own ideas for communication to another; the dynamic feedback inherent in dialogue; and the creation of cognitive conflict and an awareness of the need for decentration. The paper then presents a framework within which discussion could most usefully take place, and the learning of the computing language, Logo, is presented as an example of a context which could satisfy the criteria suggested.

Notes: Abstract This article reports an exploratory study which set out to examine how 14-year-old pupils perceive good and bad learning experiences in school. In particular, it describes the significant features in learning experiences which were associated with mathematics. Eighty-four pupils were asked, in semi-structured interviews, to tell stories about times when they had felt particularly good or particularly bad when learning. A story consisted of a ‘critical’ event actually experienced by the pupil and what the pupil had felt at the time. The structure of the interview used and the means by which the qualitative data were analysed are discussed, as well as the main findings of the research.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we attempt to map out some relationships between pedagogy and student behaviour in a mathematical microworld. We illustrate our analysis by a series of episodes which occurred in a Logo-based microworld constructed around the notions of ratio and proportion. We explore the patterns of pedagogy associated with on and off-computer activities and suggest how the teacher has significant roles in both settings; particularly in helping pupils to bridge the discursive disjuncture between the practices of Logo- and schoolmathematics.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, we explore the relationship between learners' actions, visualisations and the means by which these are articulated. We describe a microworld, Mathsticks, designed to help students construct mathematical meanings by forging links between the rhythms of their actions and the visual and corresponding symbolic representations they developed. Through a case study of two students interacting with Mathsticks, we illustrate a view of mathematics learning which places at its core the medium of expression, and the building of connections between different mathematisations rather than ascending to hierarchies of decontextualisation.

Notes: Abstract We present a study of the meanings of average and variation displayed by paediatric nurses. We trace how these meanings shape, and are shaped by, nurses' interpretations of trends in patient and population data. We suggest a theoretical framework for making sense of the data which compares and contrasts nurses' epistemology with that of official mathematics. Finally, we outline some provisional didactical implications.

Notes: Abstract We seek to analyse the notion of structuring resources and their role in shaping mathematical activity, and more broadly to add to our understanding of mathematical epistemologies in workplace settings. Our analysis is of two nursing activities – drug administration and fluid balance monitoring – based on data collected in an in–depth study of paediatric nurses on the ward. In the first activity, we examine ways in which nurses conceptualise ratio and proportion problems, while in the second, we provide a case study of two nurses discussing conflicting strategies when monitoring the fluid balance of a patient. We discuss the ways in which the available resources give mathematical and professional meanings in these situations and draw out some implications for the design of viable didactical strategies in vocational mathematics teaching.
