    Notes: Abstract Epithermal neutron activation analysis (ENAA) was applied to the determination of the contents of bromine and iodine in 40 biological and environmental standard reference materials and Chinese diets. Boron nitride (BN) for solid samples and BN+Cd for liquid samples were adopted as shield material. Irradiation was carried out in inner and outer irradiation sites in a Miniature Source Reactor (MNSR) for solid and liquid samples, respectively. The 443 keV photopeak of 128I and the 616 keV photopeak of 80Br were used. The precision of measurement (relative standard deviation) is 2∼6% for contents of iodine of more than 100 ng/g and 8∼12% in the 20∼100 ng/g range in solid samples, and 12∼18% at less than 100 ng/ml in liquid samples. For bromine, the precision of measurement is 2–8% for solid samples and lower than 13% for liquid samples. The detection limits under experimental conditions varied between 10∼30 ng/g, 55∼95 ng/g and 25∼68 ng/g for iodine and 50∼150 ng/g, 200∼450 ng/g and 100∼300 ng/g for bromine in ENAA with BN shield in inner irradiation sites, with Cd shield and BN+Cd shield in outer irradiation sites, respectively.

    Notes: : An anti-sulfamethazine monoclonal antibody was developed in a BALB/c mouse immunized with sulfamethazine (SM2) -human serum albumin (HSA). Using this monoclonal antibody, an indirect competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (cELISA) was developed to detect SM2 and its metabolites in chicken breast muscle tissue. The 50% inhibition value (IC50) was 9.3 ng/mL. When SM2 was spiked at levels of 20 to 200 ng/g, recoveries ranged from 81.3% to 104.2% with coefficients of variation (CVs) of 4.3% to 19.3%. The metabolite N4−acetyl SM2 was also evaluated by the same assay. When it was fortified atlevels of 20 to 200 ng/g, recoveries ranged from 80.4% to 100.8% with CVs of 3.0% to 14.2%. The results were confirmed with analysis by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). In an actual residue study, the results obtained by cELISA did not correlate well with those obtained by HPLC (P 〈 0.05). This might be due to the coextraction of cross-reactive SM2-related residues that were not quantified by the HPLC method. The study indicated that the presence of residues should be anticipated when considering the maximum residue limit of SM2 residue.

    Notes: Abstract Four algae reference materials, IAEA-391, 392, 393 and IAEA-140, prepared by the International Atomic Energy Agency for intercomparison under different preparation conditions were analyzed for 24 elements. Conventional neutron activation analysis (NAA) was used to determine Al, Ca, Cl, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Sb, V and Zn and epithermal NAA using BN and Cd as shielding material for I, Br, As, Ni, Mo and Cd. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) as a complementary and comparative method was applied to determine Pb, Sn, Ni, Sr, Rb, As, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, V, Mo and Zn. Two analytical quality control standard reference materials IAEA-V-10 (hay powder) and IAEA-331 (spinach) were analyzed simultaneously with real samples. The results agree quite well with each other and with the certified values.

    Notes: Abstract The elemental concentrations and chemical species of Al, Br, Cl, Cu, K, Mg, Mn, Na and I in human liver and its subcellular fractions were studied by several biochemical techniques combined with neutron activation analysis. The highest concentrations of Al, Mg, and I were found in the nuclei, whereas those of Br, Cu, Cl, K, Mn and Na in the cytosol. About 20% of Br, half of Al and most of Cu (78.8%), Mg (65.9%) and Mn (80.6%) remained in the cellulose bags after dialysis of liver homogenate, which were suggested to be bound to macromolecules. K (100%) and more than 95% of Cl and Na were found to be in the dialyzates. Similar results were found in the fractions of nuclei, mitochondria, lysosome and microsome, respectively, after the same treatment. Further study was carried out to elucidate the elemental distribution in the cytosol by ethanol precipitation and by ammonium sulfate fractionation. The results suggested that several kinds of Cu-, Mn- and Mg-bound proteins existed in the cytosol of human liver cells.

    Notes: Abstract Molecular activation analysis (MAA) refers to an activation analysis method that is able to provide information on the chemical species of elements in systems of interest, though its exact definition has yet to be assigned. Its development is strongly stimulated by the urgent need to know the chemical species of elements, because knowledge of bulk contents or concentrations is often insufficient to judge biological, environmental or geochemical effects of elements. The features, methodology and limitations of MAA are outlined, as well as the up-to-date MAA progress in our laboratory.

    Notes: Abstract 19 elements, such as Ca, Mg, Fe, Se, Cu, Zn, etc., in hair of 65 patients with chronic bronchitis, pulmonary emphysema and cor-pulmonale diseases and 65 healthy people have been investigated by instrumental neutron activation analysis. The results show that the contents of Ca and Mg are lower and Fe, As and Co are higher in the hair of patients than in healthy persons. The contents of Ca and Mg are lower and Fe is higher in the hair of patients during attack periods of chronic bronchitis than in relaxed periods. The differences are significant (P〈0.05–0.01). The content of Ca is closely related to that of Mg in hair (P〈0.01). The contents of inorganic elements in the Chinese medicine cough and asthma capsule used to treat chronic bronchitis have been determined. The results show that the contents of elements Ca, Mg, Sr, etc., are higher in this medicine than the average amounts of these elements in 120 other Chinese medicines.

    Notes: Abstract The distribution of iodine in various biological macromolecules in Sargassum kjellmanianum was studied using neutron activation analysis combined with chemical and biochemical separation techniques. The results indicate that iodine is mainly bound with protein, part of iodine with pigment and polyphenol, and little with polysaccharides, such as algin, fucoidan and cellulose. This result is significant for the mechanism of enriching iodine of algae and utilization of alga iodine.

    Notes: Abstract The cadmium and boron ratios from 44 elements, totally 66 nuclides, were determined in the inner and outer irradiation sites of the Miniature Neutron Source Reactor (MNSR). China Institute of Atomic Energy. A permanent Cd-shielded epithermal neutron irradiation site has been designed and installed in the outer of the beryllium reflector of this reactor. Elements e.g., I, Br, Sr, Si, Th and U in biological samples, such as foodstuff, water and blood, geological and environmental samples, such as soil, rock, sediment and vegetable leaves were analyzed by BN-shielded epithermal neutron activation analysis (ENAA), and Au, As, Sb, Th and U by Cd-shielded ENAA. The results show that the detection limits of these elements by ENAA are better by a factor of 1.5–7 than those with conventional NAA.

    Notes: Abstract Repeated irradiation enhances the precision and sensitivity of INAA based on short-live radionuclides, but entail systematic losses due to dead time. The relative standard deviation in the net peak area decreases with the square root of the number of cycles while the systematic bias increases with it. The limits of decision, detection and determination decrease in a somewhat more complicated way with the number of cycles. The derived formulation is applied to the determination of selenium in hair by the 161.9 keV photopeak of77mSe,T 1/2=17.8 s.
