Notes: The flower colour of Gerbera, an important ornamental cut flower, is derived from carotenoids and flavonoids. The knowledge of enzymological and genetic control of flavonoid biosynthesis is still incomplete. The present paper summarizes the results obtained at our institute between 1981 and 1993. The material for the investigation of phenotypic segregation and segregation of flavonoids after chromatographic analysis came from 408 progenies of controlled crosses. Phenotypic segregation analysis showed acyanic genotypes to be homozygous recessive and recessive epistatic over cyanic genotypes, respectively. This was confirmed by the existence of two loci controlling steps in biosynthesis (fht, dfr or ans) showing recessive mutants and complementary gene action after crosses. Flavone formation is effected by one dominant allele (fns+); dominant and recessive genotypes are now available. Regarding anthocyanidin inheritance, an unusual epistasis of 4′-hydroxylation (pelargonidin formation) over 3′,4′-hydroxylation (cyanidin formation) was observed. Final proof of the postulated gene actions will come from enzymological and molecular biological investigations of the chemogenetically defined Gerbera genotypes now available.

Notes: Different Pelargonium hybrids are of great importance to horticulture. Breeding; for F1 hybrid and clonal eultivars is particularly prevalent in Europe, Japan and North America. The results of a great deal of breeding research are scattered throughout different journals and published in several different languages. The aim of this review is to summarize the results of research on interspecific crosses and the inheritance of flower and leaf colour, plant habit, resistance and floret type.

Notes: To meet international quality standards, genetic studies and breeding programmes concerning secondary plant products in medicinal plants are important. It was the intention of the present study to test existing hypotheses on the inheritance of the bisaboloids using the genetic analysis of segregating progenies from controlled, self and cross pollinations within and between different chemotypes. Such types were analysed by means of TAS-TLC.Results from 40 interconnected progenies confirmed the biosynthetic pathway from bisabolol via bisabololoxid A to bisabolonoxid. It could further he shown that three loci act in this pathway; the genotype oo., (bisabolol) is epistatic to P/p, a gene controlling synthesis from bisabolol-5,6-epoxid (OO) of either bisabololoxid A(O.P.) or B (O.pp). The dominance of P appears to be incomplete. The genotype pp is epistatic to the locus N/n which governs the step from bisabololoxid A – (O.P.nn) to bisabolonoxid (O.P.N). The most desirable genotype, which contains both bisabolol and matricine, is double recessive.

Notes: The steroid bearing medicinal plant, S. laciniatum, was bred for high solasodine yield for commercial cultivation in Thailand.Starting materials for breeding consisted of seven populations of different origin. Variability among these populations was examined using an unselected control population cultivated over three years. Additive and dominance variance were estimated from a polycross and diallel mating design.Significant genotypic variability was found for solasodine concentration, height of the plants, and total shoot length, promising successful selection for the most important yield characters.Additive variance and heritability in the narrow sense were low for all yield characters, due to previous selection of the parental plants used for the polycross and diallel mating. No dominance effects could be found for any of the characters. In conclusion, breeding S. laciniatum for quantitative yield characters by selection will be superior to hybrid breeding. As a result of selection, significant increases in the most important yield characters in the offspring of selected populations were obtained.
