    Notes: Abstract The effect of P applications and mycorrhizal inoculation on the growth and P nutrition of Anthyllis cytisoides L. (Fabaceae) and Brachypodium retusum (Pers.) Beauv. (Poaceae) was studied. Both plants are widely distributed and well adapted to semi-arid habitats in southern Spain. In all treatments, even with high P doses, mycorrhizal plants showed a higher concentration of phosphorus in their tissues than non-mycorrhizal plants. Mycorrhizal inoculation enhanced the growth of the plants when no P was applied. At high P addition, non-mycorrhizal plants showed higher growth than mycorrhizal plants. The response of each plant type to P application was somewhat different.

    Notes: Abstract A bioassay was carried out to measure the mycorrhizal population levels in five soils disturbed by mining activities. Mycorrhizal infection of Medicago sativa (as test plant) was always less than 56%, and in some cases there was no mycorrhization. Thus degradation of soil by mining brings about a decrease in mycorrhizal inoculum potential. No relationship was found between the number of spores and either infectivity or soil characteristics.

    Notes: Abstract A survey was carried out of the seasonal variations in the number of spores in the soil and of the percentage of root infection. The stage of development of the host plants, environmental variations and physicochemical characteristics of the soil were taken into account. Fifteen plants valid as forage and adaptable to semi-arid conditions and poor soils were selected. In general, the maximum spore density was reached in the fruit-bearing period of the plants. It remained high during autumn, fell to a minimum in winter and tended to increase in spring. Root infection was at a maximum when the plants flowered, after which it decreased to a minimum in summer.

    Notes: Abstract The ftsZ gene was cloned from the chromosomal DNA of Brevibacterium lactofermentum by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using two oligonucleotides designed from two conserved regions found in most of the previously cloned and sequenced ftsZ genes from other microorganisms. ftsZ is a single-copy gene in corynebacteria and is located downstream from ftsQ and murC, indicating linkage between genes involved in peptidoglycan synthesis (mur genes) and genes involved in cell division (fts genes). The organisation of the cluster is similar to that in Streptomyces and different from those of Escherichia coli or Bacillus subtilis because ftsA is not located upstream of ftsZ. The gene was expressed in E. coli using the T7 expression system; the calculated molecular weight of the expressed protein was 50 kDa. Expression of the B. lactofermentum ftsZ gene in E. coli inhibited cell division and led to filamentation. The ftsZ gene of this organism does not complement ftsZ mutations or deletions in E. coli, when cloned on low or high-copy-number vectors.

    Notes: Abstract Tadpoles of Rana perezi were kept for 14 weeks in water containing two sublethal levels of the carbamate insecticide ZZ-Aphox® or the organophosphate Folidol®. Approximate concentrations of their active ingredients were 0.25 and 1 mg/L. Resulting malformations were studied by skeletal analysis and histological and histochemical investigation of the rear limbs of the tadpoles. The pesticides caused the animals to have malformations of the spinal column (scoliosis) and/or limbs (short and thick long bones with the epiphyses grossly twisted). Histochemical study showed differences in the composition of the connective matrix, and microscopic examination of the long bones indicated alterations in the thickness of the uncalcified bone matrix (osteoid) and the presence of abundant vascularised connective tissue in the region of the periosteum. The results confirmed changes in the composition of the connective tissue matrix as the cause of the defects observed in bone formation which are also discussed in relation to vitamin D absorption and calcium homeostasis.

    Notes: Abstract Embryos of Rana perezi were kept under laboratory conditions and treated with carbamate ZZ-Aphox® at chronic doses of 0.02‰ and 0.14‰ for 9 weeks. Both the histological study and the analysis of mortality show a direct relationship between the dosage and the effects of the pesticide. The histological study of the survivors over 56 days show damages in gills, liver, gall-bladder, heart, and notochord. Damages on the epithelia of gills (on their distal portion) and gall-bladder recover over a few days, whereas those provoked on the compacting of the hepatic parenchyma and the hepatocytes, the auricle and the perinotochordal collagenic fibers alter their structure in a lasting way. Potentials of such alterations are discussed, with special reference to the possible interference of the pesticide on the successful synthesis of the supporting connective sheaths.

    Notes: Abstract The influence of arbuscular mycorrhizae (AM) on plant growth and Zn and Pb uptake by Lygeum spartum and Anthyllis cytisoides was studied in soils with different levels of these heavy metals. A. cytisoides is highly dependent on AM for optimal growth, while L. spartum is a facultative mycotroph. Mycorrhizal and nonmycorrhizal plants were grown in soil supplemented with 0, 10, 100 and 1000 mg of Zn kg-1 soil or 0, 100 and 1000 mg of Pb kg-1 soil. Two different mycorrhizal fungi were separately studied: Glomus macrocarpum isolated from a non contaminated site and a strain of Glomus mosseae isolated from a soil contaminated with these metals. The infectivity of the fungi was not affected by the presence of Zn or Pb in the soil. In unamended soil, both fungi were equally effective in promoting plant growth, but when Zn or Pb were added to soils, G. mosseae was more efficient than G. macrocarpum in stimulating plant growth of A. cytisoides. A. cytisoides was unable to grow unless mycorrhizal. Metal addition to the soil induced a reduction in the biomass of L. spartum and of mycorrhizal A. cytisoides, and a decrease in shoot P concentration of mycorrhizal plants. The concentration of metals in the plants varied according to the amount added to the soil and to the inoculation treatment: at low doses, mycorrhizal plants showed equal or higher concentration of Zn or Pb than nonmycorrhizal ones; at higher doses, however, metal concentrations in the plants inoculated with G. mosseae were lower than those found in the corresponding controls, while the plants inoculated with G. macrocarpum showed similar (L. spartum) or even higher (A. cytisoides) levels than the controls.

    Notes: Abstract Twenty isolates of Verticillium fungicola var. fungicola collected from diseased fruit-bodies of Agaricus bisporus from prochloraz-treated crops, were exposed to a range of concentrations of six chemicals (benomyl, chlorothalonil, formaldehyde, iprodione, prochloraz-Mn-complex and prochloraz + carbendazim) in vitro. EC50 values were determined for each fungus-fungicide combination. All isolates were more sensitive to prochloraz-Mn-complex (EC50 values less than 5 mg 1−1) than to the remainder fungicides, and only seven isolates were moderately sensitive (EC50 values between 5 and 50 mg 1−1) to prochloraz + carbendazim. All isolates were moderately sensitive to formaldehyde, whereas the majority of isolates were very resistant to the other three fungicides (benomyl, chlorothalonil and iprodione).
