Ferrer In multilayers with weak perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, nucleation of magnetic vortex-antivortex pairs at the surfaces is set by topological characteristics, yielding a robust means to control vortex motion in extended films. However, exploiting this effect in digital memory devices would require a suitably broad range of fields supporting guided vortex motion. X-ray microscopy reveals cycloidal domains at the top surface with a stability range of tens of mT, in which propagation of magnetic vortices is effectively guided by the pattern of parallel stripes.
