    Notizen: Three experimental techniques were employed to determine the partition coefficient (K) of toluene, d-limonene, and ethyl acetate between water and polystyrene. These techniques were gas chromatography, (GC) gel permeation chromatography (a novel approach), and a dynamic thermal stripping-thermal desorption procedure. Comparative results of K values, range of applicability and the limitations of each technique were determined. GC was very suitable for systems showing high K values, while gel permeation chromatography was excellent for direct measurement of sorbed compounds. Statistical analysis of results and kinetics of the sorption process were included. Values of K were 800 for toluene, 5100 for d-limonene and 1.9 for ethyl acetate.

    Notizen: A flow-through vapor exposure system was developed to evaluate the effects of 2-nonanone vapor on the decay of apple slices inoculated with Penicillium expansum Link, and Botrytis cinerea Pers. Treatments with 2-nonanone at 130 to 300 μL (STP)/L of air at 23°C retarded growth of fungi on PDA. At 300 μLL-1, fungal growth was completely suppressed; however, it re-grew when transferred to air. At 5°C, exposure to 50 μL.L-1 suppressed, and at 100 μL.L-1 apparently killed, P. expansum on PDA and apple slices. For P. expansum at 5°C, only 25% of the 2-nonanone used at 23°C was needed. Physiological damage occurred on the peel of treated apples.

    Notizen: Biodegradable and edible films were prepared from three types of wheat flours: commercial bread, hard red winter, and soft white. Films were produced at two pH values (4 and 11) and tested for oxygen permeability as related to temperature. Films were also produced with a cross-linked agent and tested for tensile strengths. Oxygen permeability was 5.9 × 10−20 to 18.5 × 10−20 m3O2 m m−2 s−1 Pa−1 similar to values for commercial nylon. The oxygen permeability activation energy varied from 9.1 to 14.5 kcal mol−1, depending on type of flour and pH did not affect oxygen permeability. Presence of the cross-linking agent increased the strength of films and elongation at break ranged from 490% to 640%, while tensile stress at break ranged from 25.8 × 10−3 kg m−2 to 44.1 × 10−3 kg m−2, lower than commercial nylon.

    Notizen: Abstract This paper studies the expected total cost (ETC) criterion for discrete-time Markov control processes on Borel spaces, and possibly unbounded cost-per-stage functions. It presents optimality results which include conditions for a control policy to be ETC-optimal and for the ETC-value function to be a solution of the dynamic programming equation. Conditions are also given for the ETC-value function to be the limit of the α-discounted cost value function as α ↑ 1, and for the Markov control process to be `stable" in the sense of Lagrange and almost surely. In addition, transient control models are fully analized. The paper thus provides a fairly complete, up-dated, survey-like presentation of the ETC criterion for Markov control processes on Borel spaces.

    Notizen: Growth factors activate phospholipases, causing the generation of diverse lipid metabolites with second messenger function. Among them, the phosphatidylcholine-preferring phospholipase D (PLD) has attracted great interest, since in addition to the transient activation by growth factors stimulation, it is constitutively activated in some of the src- and ras-transformed cells investigated. To establish further the functional relationship of ras oncogenes with PLD, we have investigated its mechanism of regulation. Growth factors such as PDGF or FGF activate the PC-PLD enzyme by a common, PKC-dependent mechanism. By contrast, ras oncogenes activate the PC-PLD enzyme by a PKC-independent mechanism. These results suggest the existence of at least two mechanisms for PLD activation, and ras oncogenes contribute to one of them. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Notizen: Sorption and transport properties of water through films of Nylon-6 were obtained at 5, 23, and 40°C. Commercially available films were used and a Cahn electrobalance was employed for measuring the water uptake by the polymer samples. Values of the water sorption isotherms are accurately described by the Langmuir/Flory-Huggins dual-mode sorption model. At water activity values below 0.15, the volume fraction of water described by the Langmuir portion of the model was greater than the Flory-Huggins population. Solubility and diffusion coefficients of water, as well as the diffusion activation energy and enthalpy of dissolution of water for Nylon-6, were determined from the sorption experiments. Values obtained support the hypothesis of a bimodal water sorption mode, and the formation of water clusters. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notizen: The effect of presence of water on the transport of oxygen through films of Nylon-6 was evaluated at 5, 23, and 40°C by permeation experiments. Through the oxygen permeability experiments it was found that the diffusion of oxygen through Nylon-6 is not a simple Fickian process and the total diffusion process can be expressed by a bimodal diffusion mechanism. Permeability, solubility, and diffusion coefficients were determined as a function of water activity for both mechanisms. The effect of sorbed water on the oxygen diffusion and solubility in the polymer is presented as a function of the state of water in the polymer and as a result of the molecular competition between water and oxygen. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notizen: Sorption isotherms of alcohols in EVOH copolymers were determined by inverse gas chromatography below and above the glass transition temperature. The sorbates studied were: methanol, ethanol, n-propanol, i-propanol, n-butanol, i-butanol, s-butanol, and t-butanol. From the sorption isotherms, Henry's law solubility coefficients (S) were evaluated and correlated to size, condensability, and (SINGLE BOND)OH position in the molecule as well as on temperature. Molecular dimension was an important factor, affecting the solubility via two contrary effects: molecular size and condensability. When comparing alcohols of the same size, primary alcohols were sorbed more than secondary alcohols and these more than tertiary alcohols at every temperature in the study. At low temperatures, the larger the size the greater the solubility, contrary to what was observed at high temperatures. Temperature effect on solubility was also tested applying Van't Hoff's equation. Since S behaved differently below and above Tg for every sorbate two values of the enthalpy of solution were obtained, positive above Tg and negative below Tg. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Beschreibung: Human cell reprogramming technologies offer access to live human neurons from patients and provide a new alternative for modeling neurological disorders in vitro. Neural electrical activity is the essence of nervous system function in vivo. Therefore, we examined neuronal activity in media widely used to culture neurons. We found that classic basal media, as well as serum, impair action potential generation and synaptic communication. To overcome this problem, we designed a new neuronal medium (BrainPhys basal + serum-free supplements) in which we adjusted the concentrations of inorganic salts, neuroactive amino acids, and energetic substrates. We then tested that this medium adequately supports neuronal activity and survival of human neurons in culture. Long-term exposure to this physiological medium also improved the proportion of neurons that were synaptically active. The medium was designed to culture human neurons but also proved adequate for rodent neurons. The improvement in BrainPhys basal medium to support neurophysiological activity is an important step toward reducing the gap between brain physiological conditions in vivo and neuronal models in vitro.
