Notes: Abstract A numerical study of the thermally-induced response of two similar decomposing, expanding glass-filled polymer composites has been conducted. The study was performed using a newly developed numerical model, the accuracy of which was established by comparing predicted and experimental temperature profiles for one of the composites of interest. The results of the study were used to evaluate the effects of composition and processing history on the response of the materials.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Thermomechanische Analyse (TMA) wurde zur Untersuchung der thermoplastischen Polymere HDPE, LDPE und PS angewandt.
Notes: Abstract The purpose of the work was to characterize the thermomechanical behaviour of two well-known and widely-used thermoplastic polymers. Both dynamic and constant load measurements were made for high-density polyethylene (HDPE), low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and amorphous polystyrene (PS). The results of these measurements yield valuable information which can aid in both design applications and material processing.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Mit Hilfe von Schmelzpunkten metallischer Standards wurde eine Methode zur Temperatureichung von Schubstangendilatometern und TMA-Systemen entwickelt.
Notes: Abstract A method for the temperature calibration of pushrod dilatometers and thermomechanical analysis systems using the melting points of metal standards has been established. With this technique, the measured melting temperatures of high-purity metal standards are determined from the sharp change in the length curve which accompanies melting. This procedure was used for the absolute temperature calibration of a pushrod dilatometer capable of operation up to 2000 °C. The results of this calibration show that the technique can be used with a high degree of accuracy and confidence.

Notes: The line source technique for determination of thermal conductivity has been modified to allow measurement to higher temperatures than previously attained. This required the addition of a high-temperature tube furnace to the standard experimental equipment. The modified device was used to measure the temperature-dependent thermal conductivities of a glass- and talc-filled phenol-formaldehyde(phenolic) resin and a glass- and fiberglass-filled acrylonitrile-butadiene (AB) copolymer. Thermal conductivities of the virgin material were measured from room temperature to the onset of thermal decomposition. The char material thermal conductivities were measured from room temperature to approximately 900°C. A least-squares fit of the data yielded a linear-curve fit for the virgin material and a third-order fit for the char material.

Notes: The kinetics of high-temperature carbon-silica reactions for a widely used glass-filled phenolic resin have been studied. Weight-loss and rate-of-weight-loss data were obtained at four heating rates ranging from 5 to 50°C per minute using standard thermogravimetric techniques. Experimental data were obtained at temperatures between 30 and approximately 1700°C. The kinetic parameters were calculated from these data using a multiple heating rate technique. Close agreement was obtained between the fractional weight loss calculated using the kinetic parameters and the measured values.

Notes: An efficient and economical experimental apparatus has been designed and built which delivers a known radiant heat flux and simultaneously measures the in-depth temperature profiles in polymeric materials. Test samples are maintained in a controlled environment and are heated radiantly by a silicon carbide heating element capable of producing heat fluxes up to 7.0 cal/cm2-sec. The experimental data produced by this device are extremely accurate and therefore are suitable for use in verification of numerical models. The utility of the apparatus was demonstrated by measuring temperature profiles to approximately 1000°C in a glass-filled phenol-formaldehyde resin.
