Notes: Abstract Couette flow of an electrically conducting compressible fluid with uniform magnetic field applied transversely between flat walls of arbitrary electrical conductivity, radiative emissivity and temperature is analysed. The equations of steady flow are formulated with the introduction of temperature dependent coefficients of viscosity and thermal and electrical conductivity, together with absorption coefficient in addition dependent upon the density. Profiles of velocity, induced magnetic field, radiative flux and temperature are derived numerically under a one-dimensional modelling. The parameter dependence, expressed as a power law, is found to have a marked effect upon the velocity and magnetic field but to be of little import for the thermal profiles. Similar influence is found for the effect of wall electrical conductivity and emissivity. On the other hand, changes in the strength of the fluid thermal conductivity significantly affect the temperature profile in the presence of electromagnetic interaction.

Notes: Abstract The growth of small disturbances is studied in an electrically conducting and reacting gas permeated by a magnetic field. The model extends to the magnetogasdynamic case some aspects of the theory of spinning detonation waves. It is shown that the stratification introduced by the applied magnetic field constrains the orientation of the propagation and that whilst the rate of wave growth is significantly impeded by the magnetic field it is not totally inhibited.

Notes: Summary The non-linearised equations of flow for a perfectly electrically conducting and thermally radiating inviscid gas are analysed using the differential approximation for a grey gas of arbitrary opacity including effects of radiative flux, pressure and energy density. The speeds of propagation of weak discontinuities are established with oblique magnetic field, together with the jump relations for the derivatives of the field variables. For the special case of one-dimensional flows with planar, cylindrical or spherical symmetry the compatibility conditions on the characteristic surfaces associated with the wavefronts are explicitly determined.

Notes: Summary An exact solution in closed form, in terms of elliptic functions, is obtained for the one-dimensional steady flow of a polytropic gas with finite constant electrical conductivity which is influenced by an oblique magnetic field and a transverse electric field in the absence of viscosity, thermal conductivity and all other non-electrical dissipative mechanisms. The solution is presented in terms of elementary functions and the many possible flow patterns are discussed in detail in the case when, at some position, the transverse momentum equals the transverse Maxwell stress; a case which is appropriate to the structure of switch-on and switch-off shock waves.

Notes: Summary The stability of three dimensional infinitesimal disturbances is examined for the laminar flow of a thermally radiating, viscous, electrically and heat-conducting fluid between parallel walls with transverse magnetic field. In addition to the classical criteria for the non-radiative case a further system of homogeneous differential equations with mixed boundary conditions arises yielding possible further eigenvalues and requirements for stable flows. For the overall configuration the analogue of Squire's theorem is shown to fail. The eigenvalue problem is of unusual type with the eigenvalue parameter appearing non linearly in both the differential equation and boundary conditions. A study of two-dimensional disturbances is carried out in detail for non-thermally conducting fluids and for a particular wave number the further eigenvalues are shown by exact analysis to be always stable. In channels with black walls at the same temperature extensive numerical calculations for a range of wave-numbers and a variety of other parameters all yield the same result.
