Bis-acetylenic Compounds, VII1). On the Structure of Verdene and Verdenoid CompoundsVerdenoids, obtained by photochemical dimerization from 1.2-bis-[ethinyl]-benzenes 1, 2, 7 and 8 are azulenes with two C = C-groups as substituents. The existing data on verdene (from 3), tetramethylverdene (from 6b) and octafluoroverdene (from 5) point largely to a “ring closed“ form (D). On the other hand the X-ray analysis work (W. Hoppe and coworkers) on tetramethylverdene furnishes evidence for the “open” azulene structure with two C = C-groups. New fluorine containing verdenoids from 7 likewise have the “open” azulene structure. We thus assign an “open” azulene structure with two acetylenic groups to octafluoroverdene just as to verdene. The surprising and deceptive data on verdene and some verdenoids are discussed.
Notes:
