    Description: Observations from approximately one-half of the Magellan nominal eight-month mission to map Venus are summarized. Preliminary compilation of initial geologic observations of the planet reveals a surface dominated by plains that are characterized by extensive and intensive volcanism and tectonic deformation. Four broad categories of units have been identified: plains units, linear belts, surficial units, and terrain units.

    Description: The book constitutes a topographic/geologic atlas of Mars compiled on the basis of data from the various Mariner missions. A large number of maps has been included which systematically describe the character and distribution of the principal landforms: craters, channels, volcanoes, and faults; also related properties such as albedo, elevation, and wind streaks. Pictures of all the important topographic features have been included. The discussion of the material is carried out with a minimum of technical detail, and Mars is examined within a context of interplanetary comparisons.

    Description: The physical, chemical, and atmospheric characteristics of the silicate planets and satellites are surveyed in terms of their effects on the volcanic evolution of the surfaces of these bodies. The equations relating the parameters affecting magma ascent through the crust and eruption are analyzed, and three major types of eruption are characterized: effusive, steady explosive, and unsteady explosive. This analytical framework is then used to predict the nature of volcanic activity on each of the planets and satellites, and the predictions are compared with actual observations. Outstanding problems are discussed, with emphasis on the need for a general model of planetary interior dynamics applicable to bodies with varying degrees of interior viscosity, mantle activity, and lithospheric plate tectonics.

    Description: A Shuttle Imaging Radar-B (SIR-B) study designed to develop a better understanding of the application of radar in geological studies is described. The specific objectives for deltaic environments include the examination of delta morphology and the intertidal zone, the surface expression of shallow bathymetry, the characterization of vegetation cover, and the water balance of the delta. In impact crater environments, the goals include the establishment of the radar characteristics of exposed craters and the application of this knowledge to test for the detectability of very poorly exposed craters.

    Description: Global data sets returned by the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS), Mars Odyssey, and Mars Express spacecraft and recent analyses of Martian meteorites suggest that most of the major geological events of Martian history occurred within the first billion years of solar system formation. This period was a time of heavy impact bombardment of the inner solar system, a process that strongly overprinted much of the Martian geological record from that time. Geophysical signatures nonetheless remain from that period in the Martian crust, and several geochemical tracers of early events are found in Martian meteorites. Collectively, these observations provide insight into the earliest era in Martian history when the conditions favoring life were best satisfied.

    Description: Each of the three Tharsis Montes shield volcanoes on Mars has fan-shaped deposits on their flanks. A detailed analysis of the multiple facies of the Arsia Mons deposits, coupled with field observations of polar glaciers in Antarctica, shows that they are consistent with deposition from cold-based mountain glaciers. Key features of these glaciers are: (1) they formed only on the western flank of each volcano, (2) enough ice accumulated to cause them to flow but without basal melting, (3) there were multiple advances and retreats, (4) the last major glaciation was more than several million years ago, (5) the areal extent of the deposits they left behind decreases northward, (6) together the deposits range in elevation from a low of 1.5 to a high of 8.5 km, and (7) there are no signs that significant accumulation is occurring today.

    Description: Pioneer Venus data sets for global topography, surface roughness, and reflectivity are analyzed, and the geological significance of some of the distinctive surface types is locally calibrated by examining high-resolution images from the Venera lander spacecraft and the Arecibo Observatory. Regional rock and bedrock surfaces are found to cover the majority of the planet. The relatively smooth rock and bedrock surfaces probably represent lava flows. Porous and unconsolidated fine materials cover less than about 27 percent of the surface. The distribution of soil surfaces indicate that they are the result of local weathering and small amounts of lateral transport. Several hypotheses for the origin of the high-dielectric materials which cover a small portion of the surface are discussed.

    Description: The ascent and emplacement of basaltic magma on the earth and moon is modeled by the application of geological and physical observations and constraints. Relatively simple mathematical models of the motion of gas/liquid mixtures are shown to be adequate in the treatment of basaltic eruptions, provided that allowance is made for the coalescence of gas bubbles and that realistic geological and petrochemical constraints are applied to the numerical values of variables. Because gas exsolution from magmas on the earth and moon commonly occur at depths of less than 2 km, it is generally convenient to consider separately the rise of bubble-free magmatic liquid at depth in a planetary crust and the more complex motions occurring near the surface with gas exsolution.

    Description: The basaltic fill of Oceanus Procellarum has been formally subdivided into four lithostratigraphic formations: The Repsold Formation, the Telemann Formation, the Hermann Formation, and the Sharp Formation. The Repsold Formation is composed of high-Ti basalts and pyroclastic deposits with an estimated age of 3.75 + or - 0.05 b.y. and an estimated volume of about 2.1 x 10 to the 5th cu km. This is overlain by the Telemann Formation composed of very low-Ti basalts and pyroclastic deposits with an estimated age of 3.6 + or - 0.2 b.y. and a volume of 4.2 x 10 to the 5th cu km. The Hermann Formation, composed of intermediate basalts with an estimated age of 3.3 + or - 0.3 b.y., represents the next youngest unit with an estimated volume of 2.2 x 10 to the 5th cu km. The youngest materials in Procellarum are the medium-to-high-Ti basalts comprising the Sharp Formation with an estimated age of 2.7 + or - 0.7 b.y. and a volume of 1.8 x 10 to the 4th cu km.
