    Description: Organic matter in surface sediments from the upper reach of the Pearl River Estuary and Lingdingyang Bay, as well as the adjacent northern South China Sea shelf was characterized using a variety of techniques, including elemental (C and N) ratio, bulk stable organic carbon isotopic composition (δ13C), and carbohydrate composition analyses. Total organic carbon (TOC) content was 1.21±0.45% in the upper reach, down to 1.00±0.22% in Lingdingyang Bay and to 0.80±0.10% on the inner shelf and 0.58±0.06% on the outer shelf. δ13C values ranged from −25.1‰ to −21.3‰ in Lingdingyang Bay and the South China Sea shelf, with a trend of enrichment seawards. The spatial trend in C/N ratios mirrored that of δ13C, with a substantial decrease in C/N ratio offshore. Total carbohydrate yields ranged from 22.1 to 26.7 mg (100 mg OC)−1, and typically followed TOC concentrations in the estuarine and shelf sediments. Total neutral sugars, as detected by the nine major monosaccharides (lyxose, rhamnose, ribose, arabinose, fucose, xylose, galactose, mannose, and glucose), were between 4.0 and 18.6 mg (100 mg OC)−1 in the same sediments, suggesting that significant amounts of carbohydrates were not neutral aldoses. Using a two end-member mixing model based on δ13C values and C/N ratios, we estimated that the terrestrial organic carbon contribution to the surface sediment TOC was ca. 78±11% for Lingdingyang Bay, 34±4% for the inner shelf, and 5.5±1% for the outer shelf. The molecular composition of the carbohydrate in the surface sediments also suggested that the inner estuary was rich in terrestrially derived carbohydrates but that their contribution decreased offshore. A relatively high abundance of deoxyhexoses in the estuary and shelf indicated a considerable bacterial source of these carbohydrates, implying that sediment organic matter had undergone extensive degradation and/or transformation during transport. Sediment budget based on calculated regional accumulation rates showed that only ~50% of the influxes of terrestrial organic carbon were accumulated in the estuary. This relatively low accumulation efficiency of terrestrial organic matter as compared to the total suspended solids (accumulation efficiency ~73%) suggested significant degradation of the terrestrial organic carbon within the estuarine system after its discharge from the river. This study demonstrated that the combination of the bulk organic matter properties together with the isotopic composition and molecular-level carbohydrate compositions can be an efficient way to track down the source and fate of organic matter in highly dynamic estuarine and coastal systems. The predominance of terrestrially originated organic matter in the sediment and its generally low accumulation efficiency within the estuary is not surprising, and yet it may have important implications in light of the heavy anthropogenic discharges into the Pearl River Estuary during the past thirty years.

    Description: The possibility that Arctic sea ice loss weakens mid-latitude westerlies, promoting more severe cold winters, has sparked more than a decade of scientific debate, with apparent support from observations but inconclusive modelling evidence. Here we show that sixteen models contributing to the Polar Amplification Model Intercomparison Project simulate a weakening of mid-latitude westerlies in response to projected Arctic sea ice loss. We develop an emergent constraint based on eddy feedback, which is 1.2 to 3 times too weak in the models, suggesting that the real-world weakening lies towards the higher end of the model simulations. Still, the modelled response to Arctic sea ice loss is weak: the North Atlantic Oscillation response is similar in magnitude and offsets the projected response to increased greenhouse gases, but would only account for around 10% of variations in individual years. We further find that relationships between Arctic sea ice and atmospheric circulation have weakened recently in observations and are no longer inconsistent with those in models.

    Notes: The purpose of this research is to investigate the micro-mechanism of anelastic behavior ofmetallic glass. The changes of atomic arrangement in Cu50Zr50 metallic glass were observed directlyby EXAFS method during tensile deformation. The transmission-mode EXAFS measurementsaround Zr K-edge and Cu K-edge of the sample in various amounts of tensile deformation conditionswere done. The interatomic distance between Cu-Zr increased, and that between Zr-Zr decreasedsimultaneously, with the amount of tensile deformation increase of the sample at first stage ofdeformation. When the atomic distances reached to certain values respectively, they recovered to theinitial values of no tensile deformation condition at first stage, and then the atomic distances changedas same manner as the first stage of deformation, respectively. This is the first observation on thechange of atomic arrangement during tensile deformation of metallic glass

    Notes: In switched-angle spinning spectroscopy (SAS) a sample is spun about different angles, β, relative to the magnetic field, during various periods of the experiment. In the present work, SAS is combined with two-dimensional exchange spectroscopy in order to correlate carbon-13 chemical shift tensors of the carbonyl (1) and hydroxyl (2) carbons of tropolone. Experiments were performed on a sample enriched to 25 at. % in each of these sites (at different molecules). At this level of enrichment the dominant exchange mechanism between the two sites involves spin diffusion. The experiment consists of a preparation period during which the sample spins at the magic angle and the magnetization of one of the sites is quenched by means of a selective pulse sequence. During the rest of the experiment the sample spins with its axis away from the magic angle except for a short period just before the detection where the axis is switched to the magic angle in order to select the magnetization to be detected. Experiments were performed for all four possible combinations of the initial and final magnetizations, thus providing chemical shift correlations between carbons 1,1′, 2, and 2′ in the two magnetically inequivalent (but symmetry related) molecules in the unit cell. Combining these results with the known crystal structure of tropolone (neglecting a small tilt between the perpendicular to the molecular plane and the crystallographic c-axis) provides information on the orientation and magnitude of the chemical shift tensors of the two types of carbons. The principal values (in ppm) are σ1xx=65, σ1yy=33, σ1zz=−98, σ2xx=77, σ2yy=17, and σ2zz=−94. Assuming σzz to be perpendicular to the molecular plane, the orientations of the σyy's are 12° off the C1=0 bond (toward the hydroxyl carbon) for carbon 1 and 10° off the C3=C2 bond (away from the carbonyl carbon) for carbon 2. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract A convenient procedure for the determination of organomercuric compounds in soils from orchards and wheat fields is described based on the aqueous derivatization of the polar organomercuric halides in 0.1 M HAc-NaAc (pH 4) buffer into their hydrides by addition of 1 mL of 6% KBH4 with subsequent headspace solid phase microextraction (SPME) of the volatile derivatives. The volatile derivatives are separated by gas chromatography (GC) with a Supelco SPB-1 capillary column and on-line detected by electric heated quartz furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). The relative standard deviations for ten replicate measurements are 2.1%, 2.8% and 3.5% for methyl-, ethyl- and phenylmercury with absolute detection limits of 16 ng, 12 ng and 7 ng, respectively. This method is applied to the analysis of organomercuric compounds in soil samples and 0.04–0.64 μg/g of organomercuric species are detected in soils from different sites. The recoveries after standard addition are between 93–106%.

    Notes: A Cellular-Automaton Finite-Volume-Method (CAFVM) algorithm has beendeveloped, coupling with macroscopic model for heat transfer calculation and microscopic models for nucleation and growth. The solution equations have been solved to determine the timedependent constitutional undercooling and interface retardation during solidification. The constitutional undercooling is then coupled into the CAFVM algorithm to investigate both the effects of thermal and constitutional undercooling on columnar growth and crystal selection in the columnar zone, and formation of equiaxed crystals in the bulk liquid. The model cannot only simulate microstructures of alloys but also investigates nucleation mechanisms and growth kinetics of alloys solidified with various solute concentrations and solidification morphologies
