    Description: Measures that describe and summarize sediment grain-size distributions are important to geologists because of the large amount of information contained in textural data sets. Statistical methods are usually employed to simplify the necessary comparisons among samples and quantify the observed differences. The two statistical methods most commonly used by sedimentologists to describe particle distributions are mathematical moments (Krumbein and Pettijohn, 1938) and inclusive graphics (Folk, 1974). The choice of which of these statistical measures to use is typically governed by the amount of data available (Royse, 1970). If the entire distribution is known, the method of moments may be used; if the next to last accumulated percent is greater than 95, inclusive graphics statistics can be generated. Unfortunately, earlier programs designed to describe sediment grain-size distributions statistically do not run in a Windows environment, do not allow extrapolation of the distribution's tails, or do not generate both moment and graphic statistics (Kane and Hubert, 1963; Collias et al., 1963; Schlee and Webster, 1967; Poppe et al., 2000). Owing to analytical limitations, electro-resistance multichannel particle-size analyzers, such as Coulter Counters, commonly truncate the tails of the fine-fraction part of grain-size distributions. These devices do not detect fine clay in the 0.6–0.1 μm range (part of the 11-phi and all of the 12-phi and 13-phi fractions). Although size analyses performed down to 0.6 μm microns are adequate for most freshwater and near shore marine sediments, samples from many deeper water marine environments (e.g. rise and abyssal plain) may contain significant material in the fine clay fraction, and these analyses benefit from extrapolation. The program (GSSTAT) described herein generates statistics to characterize sediment grain-size distributions and can extrapolate the fine-grained end of the particle distribution. It is written in Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 and provides a window to facilitate program execution. The input for the sediment fractions is weight percentages in whole-phi notation (Krumbein, 1934; Inman, 1952), and the program permits the user to select output in either method of moments or inclusive graphics statistics (Fig. 1). Users select options primarily with mouse-click events, or through interactive dialogue boxes.

    Notes: Summary The pineal gland is a universal feature of vertebrate organization and has been implicated in the control of rhythmic adaptations to daily and seasonal cycles. This paper considers three aspects of pineal function; the generation of a rhythmical endocrine signal (the nocturnal synthesis of melatonin) and the use of the signal in the regulation of circadian and photoperiodic functions. The shape of the nocturnal signal is determined by an interaction of afferent neural control and biochemical processes intrinsic to the pinealocyte. The nature of the effect of the signal upon circadian systems is unclear, and in adult mammals may not be a specific, direct influence upon the entrainment pathways of the oscillator. In the foetus, strong evidence exists for a physiological role of the maternal melatonin signal as a true internal zeitgeber, remnants of which may persist in the adult. Photoperiodic time measurement in adult and foetal mammals is critically dependent upon the melatonin signal. Indirect evidence indicates that several neural systems may be involved in the response to melatonin and consistent with this, a variety of central melatonin binding sites have been identified in the brain and pituitary. The intra-cellular actions of melatonin and the properties of melatonin responsive neural systems have yet to be identified, but in the context of photoperiodic time measurement, it is clear that the neural responses to melatonin are not dependent upon the circadian clock. The two central effects of melatonin; photoperiodic time measurement and circadian entrainment are probably mediated through completely separate mechanisms.

    Notes: Regional procedures to estimate flood magnitudes for ungaged watersheds typically ignore available site-specific historic flood information such as high water marks and the corresponding flow estimates, otherwise referred to as limited site-specific historic (LSSH) flood data. A procedure to construct flood frequency curves on the basis of LSSH flood observations is presented. Simple inverse variance weighting is employed to systematically combine flood estimates obtained from the LSSH data base with those from a regional procedure to obtain improved estimtes of flood peaks on the ungaged watershed. For the region studied, the variance weighted estimates of flow had a lower logarithmic standard error than either the regional or the LSSH flow estimates, when compared to the estimates determined by three standard distributions for gaged watersheds investigated in the development of the methodology. Use of the simple inverse variance weighting procedure is recommended when “reliable” estimates of LSSH floods for the ungaged site are available.

    Notes: A remote indicatively coupled radio frequency plasma has been used to oxidize titanium thin films evaporated onto silicon substartes. The substrate was heated during oxidation to temperatures between 200 and 500 °C using a resistively heated furance. Titanium dioxide layers were formed of thicknesses from 53 to 150 nm. The crystal structure was shown to be rutile by x-ray diffraction for oxidation temperatures of 500 °C. These samples were also seen to have a thin interfacial silicon dioxide layer. Measurements on 1-mm Al dot capacitors showed the leakage current of a 53-nm film oxidized at 500 °C to be below 10−8 A at a 2-V bias. Good capacitance-voltage characteristics were observed for high oxidation temperatures, with a dielectric constant of between 15 and 22 for the TiO2/SiO2 layers. The refractive index of the layers was measured by ellipsometry to be 2.5–2.6. Plasma oxidation thus provides a low-temperature method of forming titanium dixoide thin films.

    Notes: Abstract High minority carrier lifetimes in diffusion limited p-n photodiodes result in low dark currents and a high R0A figure of merit. Minority carrier diffusion length should be an important indicator of device performance through its link with the minority carrier lifetime. The diffusion length can be measured directly on a p-n junction device using electron beam induced current (EBIC) measurements. This paper compares diffusion lengths in epitaxially grown CdxHg1-xTe measured directly using EBIC, with those predicted from both transient and steady state lifetime measurements using Einstein's relation. In all cases, as-grown layers are vacancy-doped p-type.
