Notes: Immunoglobulin (Ig) released into the medium by monoclonal continuously cultured murine T lymphoma cells of the lines WEHI-22 and WEHI-7 was isolated by serological precipitation or solid-phase immunoadsorption techniques. The intact immunoglobulin had an electrophoretic mobility on sodium dodecyl-sulphate (SDS) containing polyacrylamide gels comparable to that of IgG (mass 150,000). This mobility was significantly faster than that of ‘7S’ IgM of murine B lymphocyte surfaces. The T lymphoma immunoglobulin consisted of a pair of heavy chains linked by disulphide bonds and light chains non-covalently bound to the heavy chains. The isolated heavy chains migrated slightly faster than the μ chains of MOPC 104E IgM. Some, but not all, antisera directed against μ chains of normal mouse serum IgM bound T lymphoma immunoglobulin apparently via a cross-reaction localized to the Fd fragment. These data indicate that immunoglobulin of T lymphoma cells and, presumably normal T lymphocytes, represents an immunoglobulin isotype which is distinct from those immunoglobulins found on the B cell surface.

Notes: [Auszug] The asymmetry would arise in a ring of synchronously rotating, irregularly shaped, particles if there was a statistical tendency for the long axes of the particles to be inclined in the trailing sense with respect to the differential rotation. Such an orientation of the axes of the particles could ...

Notes: Abstract The effect of oxidation conditions on the penetration of oxygen into growing nickel oxide scales has been examined using oxygen isotope tracers and SIMS analysis. Depth profiles and cross-section images of oxide scales show that the proportion of oxygen penetration is increased as the temperature is reduced. At 600°C, the amount of oxygen tracer transported to the scale-metal interface is considerable, approaching that observed for a conventional “duplex” microstructure. The formation of healing oxide along numerous fissures through the oxide is directly observed in SIMS images. These fissures seem to coincide with grain boundaries in the preexisting oxide. As the oxidation temperature is increased, the oxygen transport becomes less uniform, some regions of the scale showing little or no transport. Reduction in the oxygen pressure reduces the amount of oxygen penetrating the scale.

For P/Shoemaker Levy 9, in its passage close to Jupiter in 1992, this expression suggests that the critical density is ~1.2 for a spherical, non-spinning nucleus, but could be 〉2.5 for a 2:1 elongate body with a typical rotation period of ~10 hours.

Notes: Abstract For many years emission nebulae like the Great Nebula in Orion were considered essentially as ionized hydrogen clouds (HII regions) to be understood with the methods of plasma physics. Infrared observations at wavelengths between 1 and 20 μm from the ground, and in the far infrared (20 μm-1 mm) from above the atmosphere, have shown these regions to be strong infrared emitters. This radiation is due to thermal emission of dust mixed with the gas and heated by hot young stars. HII regions indicate recent star formation, and close to these regions many other signposts of early stellar development can be studied in the infrared.

Notes: Abstract It is shown that the 2.6 mm CO emission profile in the regions of two unidentified 2.4 μm features observed near the galactic centre is consistent with an explanation of these features in terms of inhomogeneities in interstellar extinction. From our observations we estimate the mass to luminosity ratio of the galactic central bulge to beM/L v=4.
