    Notes: Abstract Significant hydrologic changes were observed after the magnitude 7.3 earthquake that occurred on October 28, 1983, in central Idaho. Groundwater levels rose by as much as 3 meters near the epicenter. Discharge in many streams and springs increased, in some instances by more than 100%. One warm spring ceased flowing for several days; the flow then resumed and peaked at about nine times its original rate. Available data show no significant changes in water quality following the earthquake.

    Notes: Abstract The plainfin midshipman Porichthys notatus Girard occurs in nearshore waters off the western coast of North America. We found that the ventrally directed photophores of juvenile laboratory-grown P. notatus function in counterillumination. Their bioluminescence matched downwelling light to obscure the silhouette as viewed from below. P. notatus did not obligatorily counterilluminate at all times in appropriate light. A hydrodynamic stimulus, in addition to appropriate downwelling light, was required to induce counterillumination. This is perhaps an adaptation to conserve its Vargula-type luciferin, which is obtained from its diet. The angular distribution of light produced by P. notatus approximated that typical of downwelling light in the ocean. There was a direct relationship between downwelling irradiance and the maximum intensity of P. notatus luminescence. Insufficient light was produced to replace the light blocked by the fish under lighting conditions typical of the natural environment. The luminescence was, however, effective in eliminating the silhouette of P. notatus as observed with an image-intensifying camera and by dark-adapted human observers. Consequently, the effectiveness of counterillumination probably originates in part from the disruptive pattern of the luminous photophores. P. notatus from the Puget Sound population, which lacks a luciferin source and is non-luminous, displayed counterillumination behavior when its luminescent system was activated by force-feeding the fish with dried Vargula hilgendorfi. Experiments using adult P. notatus as predators on a mixed population of non-luminous (Puget Sound) and luminous (Santa Barbara Channel) juvenile P. notatus revealed that under conditions of dim overhead illumination non-luminous P. notatus were preyed upon at twice the rate of luminous individuals. This is the first experimental evidence suggesting that counterillumination is effective as an anti-predatory strategy.

    Notes: Abstract Simultaneously recorded spike trains were obtained using microwire bundles from unrestrained, drug-free cats during different sleep-waking states in forebrain areas associated with cardiac and respiratory activity. Cardiac and respiratory activity was simultaneously recorded with the spike trains. We applied the recurring discharge patterns detection procedure described in a companion paper (Frostig et al. 1990) to the spike and cardiorespiratory trains. The pattern detection procedure was applied to detect only precise (in time and structure) recurring patterns. Recurring discharge patterns were detected in all simultaneously recorded groups. Recurring discharge patterns were composed of up to ten spikes per pattern and involved up to four simultaneously recorded spike trains. Fourty-two percent of the recurring patterns contained cardiac and/or respiratory events in addition to neuronal spikes. When patterns were compared over different sleep-waking states it was found the the same units produced different patterns in different states, that patterns were significantly more compact in time during quiet sleep, and that changes in the discharge rates accompanying changes in sleep-waking states were not correlated with changes in pattern rate.

    Notes: Summary Chronic coadministration of oral verapamil with oral atenolol resulted in a variable increase in atenolol steady-state plasma concentrations in a group of 10 patients on chronic maintenance therapy. Individual subjects showed changes in area under the plasma atenolol concentration-time curve (AUC) of more than 100%, however group comparisons did not achieve statistical significance unless normalized for verapamil dose. Renal clearance of atenolol was shown to be decreased by more than 25% in 2 subjects studied using intravenous dosing of atenolol. This interaction is likely to contribute to the documented clinical intolerance of combinations of atenolol and verapamil.

    Notes: In nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) of I=1/2 nuclei that are scalar coupled to quadrupolar spins, a tensor operator product (TOP) basis set provides a convenient description of the time evolution of the density operator. Expressions for the evolution of equivalent I=1/2 spins, coupled to an arbitrary spin S〉1/2, were obtained by explicit algebraic density operator calculations in Mathematica, and specific examples are given for S=1 and S=3/2. Tensor operators are described by the convenient quantum numbers rank and order and this imparts to the TOP basis features that enable an intuitive understanding of NMR behavior of these spin systems. It is shown that evolution as a result of J coupling alone changes the rank of tensors for the coupling partner, generating higher-rank tensors, which allow efficient excitation of S-spin multiple-quantum coherences. Theoretical predictions obtained using the TOP formalism were confirmed using multiple-quantum filtered heteronuclear spin-echo experiments and were further employed to demonstrate polarization transfer directly to multiple-quantum transitions using the insensitive nucleus enhancement by polarization transfer pulse sequence. This latter experiment is the basis of two-dimensional heteronuclear correlation experiments and direct generation of multiple-quantum S-spin coherences can therefore be exploited to yield greater spectral resolution in such experiments. Simulated spectra and experimental results are presented. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report the successful p-type doping of CdTe films with arsenic using the photoassisted molecular beam epitaxy growth technique. These doped epilayers were grown at substrate temperatures as low as 180 °C. The room-temperature hole concentrations in the CdTe:As layers ranged from 7×1015 to 6.2×1018 cm−3 as determined by van der Pauw–Hall effect measurements. We propose a doping mechanism responsible for the high p-type doping levels observed in the films. The arsenic acceptor ionization energy was found to ∼58–60 meV using low-temperature photoluminescence measurements.
