Summary The following may be differentiated through the paper Chromatographic behavior of inorganic compounds in pure aqueous systems: anions, which as a rule migrate with the moving front; molecules, such as HgCl2, with constant pH-independentR f values; cations, which undergo cation exchange, essentially far migrating hydrated cations; and finally cations which in comparison migrate but sligthly, and which are hydrolyzed on paper and are highly pH-dependent. On the basis of the knowledge of this behavior, it is possible in the chromatogram to follow reactions with precipitation- and complexing reagents, which very quickly (within 1 to 2 hours) yield a general view of an unknown mode of reaction with amounts of several micrograms and less particularly also in comparison with known systems.
