    Description: Origami structures are of great interest in microelectronics, soft actuators, mechanical metamaterials, and biomedical devices. Current methods of fabricating origami structures still have several limitations, such as complex material systems or tedious processing steps. We present a simple approach for creating three-dimensional (3D) origami structures by the frontal photopolymerization method, which can be easily implemented by using a commercial projector. The concept of our method is based on the volume shrinkage during photopolymerization. By adding photoabsorbers into the polymer resin, an attenuated light field is created and leads to a nonuniform curing along the thickness direction. The layer directly exposed to light cures faster than the next layer; this nonuniform curing degree leads to nonuniform curing–induced volume shrinkage. This further introduces a nonuniform stress field, which drives the film to bend toward the newly formed side. The degree of bending can be controlled by adjusting the gray scale and the irradiation time, an easy approach for creating origami structures. The behavior is examined both experimentally and theoretically. Two methods are also proposed to create different types of 3D origami structures.

    Description: An approach to improve the lifetime of air plasma sprayed (APS) thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) by modifying the interfacial microstructure has been reported. The laser powder deposition technique was employed to fabricate the mesh structure (with the same composition as the bond coat) at the ceramic–substrate interface. After thermal cycling test, the APS TBCs with the mesh exhibited a much less spallation degree (5%–10%) compared with the reference samples without mesh (〉50%), implying that the mesh is effective in impeding the crack propagation along the interface. In addition, the effect of the mesh geometry parameters, e.g., height and spacing of mesh, on the spallation degree of TBCs was also investigated. Based on the results of experiment and calculation, the optimal mesh parameters were proposed.

    Description: The oxygen vacancy model has been used to explain the magnetic and electrical transport properties of dilute magnetic semiconductors and resistive switching. In particular, some authors have claimed that they found a symmetric peak corresponding to the oxygen vacancies in O1s photoelectron spectra. In this paper, using X-ray photoelectron spectra with argon ion etching, it is shown that this symmetric peak may also be interpreted as being related to O 1− anions, rather than to oxygen vacancies.

    Description: High-temperature thermal storage (HTTS) in soils is a promising energy-saving technology for space heating of buildings. Based on a laboratory experimental setup using a vertical borehole heat exchanger (BHE), dynamic changes of the soil temperature and moisture content during the thermal storage process are studied. Effects of the heat injection temperature and initial moisture content on the thermal performance of the BHE are analyzed. The results show that at the first thermal storage stage, the soil temperature and moisture content near the heat source may appear a temporary peak. Its occurrence depends on the initial soil moisture content, the heat injection temperature and the distance from the heat source. As the heat injection temperature increases, the heat transfer rate of the BHE increases greatly. As the initial soil moisture content increases, the temperature profile near the BHE tends to be deviated from the results predicted by heat conduction, thereby influencing the thermal performance of the BHE. The present results can provide useful guidelines for the design of an HTTS system.

    Description: Compositional analysis is important to interrogate spectral samples for direct analysis of materials in agriculture, environment and archaeology, etc. In this paper, multi-variate analysis (MVA) techniques are coupled with laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) to estimate quantitative elemental compositions and determine the type of the sample. In particular, we present a new multivariate analysis method for composition analysis, referred to as "spectral unmixing". The LIBS spectrum of a testing sample is considered as a linear mixture with more than one constituent signatures that correspond to various chemical elements. The signature library is derived from regression analysis using training samples or is manually set up with the information from an elemental LIBS spectral database.     Description: Powder samples of the ferrites M x Ni 1− x Fe 2 O 4 ( M  = Cr, Co and 0.0 ≤  x  ≤ 0.3) were prepared using a chemical co-precipitation method. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the two series of samples had a single-phase cubic spinel structure. It was found that the magnetic moments ( μ exp ) per formula of samples measured at 10 K decreased when Cr substituted for Ni, but increased when Co substituted for Ni, in spite of the fact that the magnetic moments of Cr 2+ (4 μ B ) and Co 2+ (3 μ B ) are higher than that of Ni 2+ (2 μ B ). With the assumption that the magnetic moments of Cr 2+ and Cr 3+ lie antiparallel to those of the Fe, Co, and Ni cations in the same sublattices of spinel ferrites, the dependences on the Cr (Co) doping level of the sample magnetic moments at 10 K were fitted successfully, using the quantum-mechanical potential barrier model earlier proposed by our group. For the two series of samples, the fitted magnetic moments are close to the experimental results.

    Description: Signaling by the Notch surface receptor controls cell fate determination in a broad spectrum of tissues. This signaling is triggered by the interaction of the Notch protein with what, so far, have been thought to be transmembrane ligands expressed on adjacent cells. Here biochemical and genetic analyses show that the ligand Delta is cleaved on the surface, releasing an extracellular fragment capable of binding to Notch and acting as an agonist of Notch activity.
