    Description: Damages from noise and vibration are increasing every year, and most of which are noises between floors in deteriorated building caused by floor impact sound. In this study, the floor vibration of the deteriorated buildings constructed with the concrete slabs of thickness no more than 150 mm was evaluated by the vibration impact sound. This highly reliable study was conducted to assess floor vibration according with the serviceability evaluation standard of Reiher / Meister and Koch and vibration evaluation standard of ISO and AIJ. Designed pressure for the concrete slab sample of floor vibration assessment was 24MPa, and the sample was manufactured pursuant to KS F 2865 and JIS A 1440-2 with size of 3200 mm × 3200 mm × 140 mm. Tests were conducted twice with accelerometers, and Fast Fourier Transform was performed for comparative analysis by the vibration assessment criteria.     Description: RNA-binding proteins are key regulators of gene expression, yet only a small fraction have been functionally characterized. Here we report a systematic analysis of the RNA motifs recognized by RNA-binding proteins, encompassing 205 distinct genes from 24 diverse eukaryotes. The sequence specificities of RNA-binding proteins display deep evolutionary conservation, and the recognition preferences for a large fraction of metazoan RNA-binding proteins can thus be inferred from their RNA-binding domain sequence. The motifs that we identify in vitro correlate well with in vivo RNA-binding data. Moreover, we can associate them with distinct functional roles in diverse types of post-transcriptional regulation, enabling new insights into the functions of RNA-binding proteins both in normal physiology and in human disease.     Description: Stenotrophomonas maltophilia has become one of the most prevalent opportunistic pathogens in hospitalized patients. This microorganism secretes outer membrane vesicles (OMVs), but the pathogenesis of S. maltophilia as it relates to OMVs has not been characterized. This study investigated the cytotoxic activity of S. maltophilia OMVs and their ability to induce inflammatory responses both in vitro and in vivo . Stenotrophomonas maltophilia ATCC 13637 and two clinical isolates were found to secrete spherical OMVs during in vitro culture. OMVs from S. maltophilia ATCC 13637 were cytotoxic to human lung epithelial A549 cells. Stenotrophomonas maltophilia OMVs stimulated the expression of proinflammatory cytokine and chemokine genes, including interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, IL-8, tumor necrosis factor-α and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1, in A549 cells. Early inflammatory responses such as congestion and neutrophilic infiltrations and profound expression of proinflammatory cytokine and chemokine genes were observed in the lungs of mice injected with S. maltophilia OMVs, and were similar to responses elicited by the bacteria. Our data demonstrate that S. maltophilia OMVs are important secretory nanocomplexes that elicit a potent inflammatory response that might contribute to S. maltophilia pathogenesis during infection.

    Notes: A frequency modulated interferometer is developed, which uses a 94 GHz Gunn oscillator and a single sideband (SSB) upconverter as a frequency modulator. An SSB upconverter makes it possible to use a heterodyne phase measurement technique with one mm-wave source. In addition, the influence of frequency drift and phase noise of a mm-wave source on the phase measurement can be reduced. In this work, the performance of a SSB upconverter as a frequency modulator is examined. Also, overall performance of the mm-wave interferometer with a SSB upconverter and line density measurement results in a mirror device are described. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.
