Description: Comparison of the genomes and proteomes of the two diptera Anopheles gambiae and Drosophila melanogaster, which diverged about 250 million years ago, reveals considerable similarities. However, numerous differences are also observed; some of these must reflect the selection and subsequent adaptation associated with different ecologies and life strategies. Almost half of the genes in both genomes are interpreted as orthologs and show an average sequence identity of about 56%, which is slightly lower than that observed between the orthologs of the pufferfish and human (diverged about 450 million years ago). This indicates that these two insects diverged considerably faster than vertebrates. Aligned sequences reveal that orthologous genes have retained only half of their intron/exon structure, indicating that intron gains or losses have occurred at a rate of about one per gene per 125 million years. Chromosomal arms exhibit significant remnants of homology between the two species, although only 34% of the genes colocalize in small "microsyntenic" clusters, and major interarm transfers as well as intra-arm shuffling of gene order are detected.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Zdobnov, Evgeny M -- von Mering, Christian -- Letunic, Ivica -- Torrents, David -- Suyama, Mikita -- Copley, Richard R -- Christophides, George K -- Thomasova, Dana -- Holt, Robert A -- Subramanian, G Mani -- Mueller, Hans-Michael -- Dimopoulos, George -- Law, John H -- Wells, Michael A -- Birney, Ewan -- Charlab, Rosane -- Halpern, Aaron L -- Kokoza, Elena -- Kraft, Cheryl L -- Lai, Zhongwu -- Lewis, Suzanna -- Louis, Christos -- Barillas-Mury, Carolina -- Nusskern, Deborah -- Rubin, Gerald M -- Salzberg, Steven L -- Sutton, Granger G -- Topalis, Pantelis -- Wides, Ron -- Wincker, Patrick -- Yandell, Mark -- Collins, Frank H -- Ribeiro, Jose -- Gelbart, William M -- Kafatos, Fotis C -- Bork, Peer -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2002 Oct 4;298(5591):149-59.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉European Molecular Biology Laboratory, Meyerhofstrasse 1, 69117 Heidelberg, Germany.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12364792" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Notes: Abstract The focusing of plane shock waves and spherical blast waves in water by parabolic and ellipsoidal reflectors is studied experimentally and numerically. The numerical computations are performed by a second order method based on an extension of Godunov's method, which is called piecewise-linear method. Tests of this method and a comparison with pressure measurements show a strong dependence of the maximum pressure attained in the focal region on the mesh size. Outside this focal region, however, good agreement between the pressure measurements and the result of the numerical computation is found. Furthermore it is shown by numerical computation, that non-linear effects in the focusing process may be partly avoided by an optimized reflector contour which depends on the strength of the incident shock wave. This modification provides that the maximum pressure is attained at the geometric focus and not at a location between reflector surface and geometrical focus.

Notes: Abstract Carbon-14 was incorporated into oxalate and CO2 from either citrate-1,5-14C, succinate-1,4-14C, or fumarate-1,4-14C by cultures of Aspergillus niger pregrown on a medium which contained glucose as the sole carbon source and which did not allow citrate accumulation. In cell-free extracts of mycelium forming oxalate and CO2 from added citrate the following enzymes of the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle were identified: citrate synthase (CE 4.1.3.7), aconitate hydratase (EC 4.2.1.3), NAD- and NADP-dependent isocitrate dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.41, 1.1.1.42), (α-oxoglutarate dehydrogenase (EC 1.2.4.2), succinate dehydrogenase (EC1.3.99.1), fumarate hydratase (EC 4.2.1.2), and malate dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.37). The in vitro activity of aconitate hydratase and of NADP-dependent isocitrate dehydrogenase was shown to be almost identical to the rate of in vivo degradation of citrate or to exceed this rate. The degradation of citrate to oxalate was inhibited completely by 9 mM fluoroacetate. It is concluded that the TCA cycle is involved in the formation of oxalate from citrate.

Notes: Abstract Mechanosensory lateral line units recorded from the medulla (medial octavolateralis nucleus) and midbrain (torus semicircularis) of the bottom dwelling catfish Ancistrus sp. responded to water movements caused by an object that passed the fish laterally. In terms of peak spike rate or total number of spikes elicited responses increased with object speed and sometimes showed saturation (Figs. 7, 14). At sequentially greater distances the responses of most medullary lateral line units decayed with object distance (Fig. 11). Units tuned to a certain object speed or distance were not found. The signed directionality index of most lateral line units was between −50 and +50, i.e. these units were not or only slightly sensitive to the direction of object motion (Figs. 10, 17). However, some units were highly directionally sensitive in that the main features of the response histograms and/or peak spike rates clearly depended on the direction of object movement (e.g. Fig. 9C, D and Fig. 16). Midbrain lateral line units of Ancistrus may receive input from more than one sensory modality. All bimodal lateral line units were OR units, i.e., the units were reliably driven by a unimodal stimulus of either modality. Units which receive bimodal input may show an extended speed range (e.g. Fig. 18).

Notes: Abstract During heat transfer measurements at flow boiling of argon a transient increase of the wall temperature has been observed, though the parameters such as heat flux, mass velocity, flow quality and system pressure were kept constant. This temperature drifting ended after several hours at a considerably higher wall temperature or with the boiling crisis. Although the purity of the test substance was higher than 99.996 vol-%, this phenomenon was caused by the solidification of CO2 on the heating surface. Further investigations showed the influence of the CO2-concentration on the drifting as well as a method to remove the CO2 out of the test fluid. Both, fouling mechanism and influence of the parameters on the fouling, can be explained satisfactorily by means of bubble-growth mechanisms.

Notes: Abstract We have studied the helium plasma in the hypernetted-chain-Approximation considering both short-ranged internuclear and long-ranged Coulomb interactions. The optimal two-particle wave function has been determined in HNC/0 approximation. The two-particle distribution functions, which have been calculated in various orders of HNC/n approximations (n=0, 4, 5), are used to determine the pycnonuclear triple-alpha-fusion rate in the density regime 108 g/cm3≤ρ≤1010 g/cm3, in which the fusing of three alpha-particles to form a12C-nucleus plays an important role in the crust evolution of an accreting old neutron star. Our calculation supports the idea that the helium liquid undergoes a phase transition to stable8Be matter at densities slightly lower thanρ≈3×109 g/ cm3 as the plasma induced screening potential then becomes strong enough to bind the8Be ground state.
