    Description: The Mesoporous NiO nanosheets with an average thickness of ∼30 nm have been synthesized by annealing Ni(OH) 2 precursors. Magnetic measurements show that the NiO nanosheets can be considered as a core-shell type magnetic structure, in which the surface shell layer behaves as a coexistence of two-dimensional diluted antiferromagnetic (2D DAFF) and spin glass (SG) behaviors; the core retains its original bulk antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase. Field-cooled hysteresis loop measurements confirm the presence of exchange bias (EB) effect in the NiO nanosheets. The temperature dependence of the exchange bias field indicates that the observed EB effect originates from an interface exchange coupling interaction between the AFM core and the 2D DAFF shell layer. A phenomenological AFM-DAFF-SG magnetic structure model is proposed to interpret the magnetic properties of these NiO nanosheets.

    Description: Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) is a sensitive indicator of thyroid function. High and low TSH levels reflect hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, respectively. Even within the normal range, small differences in TSH levels, on the order of 0.5–1.0 mU/l, are associated with significant differences in blood pressure, BMI, dyslipidemia, risk of atrial fibrillation and atherosclerosis. Most of the variance in TSH levels is thought to be genetically influenced. We conducted a genome-wide association study of TSH levels in 1346 Chinese Han individuals. In the replication study, we genotyped four candidate SNPs with the top association signals in an independent isolated Chinese She cohort ( n = 3235). We identified a novel serum TSH susceptibility locus within XKR4 at 8q12.1 (rs2622590, P combined = 2.21 x 10 –10 ), and we confirmed two previously reported TSH susceptibility loci near FOXE1 at 9q22.33 and near CAPZB at 1p36.13, respectively. The rs2622590_T allele at XKR4 and the rs925489_C allele near FOXE1 were correlated with low TSH levels and were found to be nominally associated to patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) (OR = 1.41, P = 0.014 for rs2622590_T, and OR = 1.61, P = 0.030 for rs925489_C). The rs2622590 and rs925489 genotypes were also correlated with the expression levels of FOXE1 and XKR4 , respectively, in PTC tissues ( P = 2.41 x 10 –4 and P = 0.02). Our findings suggest that the SNPs in XKR4 and near FOXE1 are involved in the regulation of TSH levels.

    Description: Neurotrophins (NTs) are important regulators for the survival, differentiation and maintenance of different peripheral and central neurons. NTs bind to two distinct classes of glycosylated receptor: the p75 neurotrophin receptor (p75(NTR)) and tyrosine kinase receptors (Trks). Whereas p75(NTR) binds to all NTs, the Trk subtypes are specific for each NT. The question of whether NTs stimulate p75(NTR) by inducing receptor homodimerization is still under debate. Here we report the 2.6-A resolution crystal structure of neurotrophin-3 (NT-3) complexed to the ectodomain of glycosylated p75(NTR). In contrast to the previously reported asymmetric complex structure, which contains a dimer of nerve growth factor (NGF) bound to a single ectodomain of deglycosylated p75(NTR) (ref. 3), we show that NT-3 forms a central homodimer around which two glycosylated p75(NTR) molecules bind symmetrically. Symmetrical binding occurs along the NT-3 interfaces, resulting in a 2:2 ligand-receptor cluster. A comparison of the symmetrical and asymmetric structures reveals significant differences in ligand-receptor interactions and p75(NTR) conformations. Biochemical experiments indicate that both NT-3 and NGF bind to p75(NTR) with 2:2 stoichiometry in solution, whereas the 2:1 complexes are the result of artificial deglycosylation. We therefore propose that the symmetrical 2:2 complex reflects a native state of p75(NTR) activation at the cell surface.     Description: Natural variation in clock parameters is necessary for the circadian clock to contribute to organismal fitness over a broad geographic range. Considerable variation is evident in the period, phase, and amplitude of 150 Arabidopsis accessions, and the period length is correlated with the day length at the latitude of origin, implying the adaptive significance of correctly regulated circadian timing. Quantitative trait loci analysis of recombinant inbred lines indicates that multiple loci interact to determine period, phase, and amplitude.     Description: The electrical manipulation of magnetic properties in perpendicularly magnetized Co 2 FeAl 0.5 Si 0.5 ultra-thin films has been investigated. An electric-field is applied by utilizing either a solid-state dielectric HfO 2 film or an ionic gel film as the gate insulator in the form of a field effect parallel capacitor. Obvious changes of the coercive field and Curie temperature (∼24 K) by gating voltage are observed for a 0.8 nm thick film, while a clear change of the magnetic anisotropy is obtained for the 1.1 nm thick one. The experimental results have been attributed to both the electric-field-induced modulation of carrier density near the interface and the oxidation-reduction effect inside the magnetic films.

    Description: Spin glass behavior and exchange bias effect have been observed in antiferromagnetic SrMn 3 O 6−x nanoribbons synthesized via a self-sacrificing template process. The magnetic field dependence of thermoremanent magnetization and isothermal remanent magnetization shows that the sample is good correspondence to spin glass and diluted antiferromagnetic system for the applied field H   2 T, respectively. By detailed analysis of training effect using Binek's model, we argue that the observed exchange bias effect in SrMn 3 O 6−x nanoribbons arises entirely from an interface exchange coupling between the antiferromagnetic core and spin glass shell. The present study is useful for understanding the nature of shell layer and the origin of exchange bias effect in other antiferromagnetic nanosystems as well.

    Description: We study the relationship between jet power and accretion for Fermi and non-Fermi blazars. We also compare the relevant parameter. Our main results are: (i) Fermi and non-Fermi blazars have significant differences in red shift, black hole mass and broad line luminosity. (ii) Fermi blazars have a higher average core-dominance parameter than non-Fermi blazars, which suggests that Fermi blazars have a strong beaming effect. (iii) We find a significant correlation between broad line emission and jet power for Fermi and non-Fermi blazars, which suggests a direct tight connection between jet and accretion. (iv) The accretion and black hole mass may have a different contribution to jet power for Fermi and non-Fermi blazars.

    Description: This article puts forward the time-dependent design method considering the load fluctuation factors for the liner based on the time-varying uncertainty theory. In this method, the time-varying uncertainty design model of liner is constructed by introducing the parameters that affect the wear rate, the volatility and the drift rate. Based on the design example, the timevarying design outline of the moving cone liner is obtained. Based on the theory of minimum wear, the gap curve of wear resistant cavity is designed, and the optimized cavity is obtained by the combination of the thickness of the cone and the cavity gap. Taking the PYGB1821 multi cylinder hydraulic cone crusher as an example, it is proved that the service life of the new liner is improved by more than 14.3%.
