    Description: Charcoal production for urban energy consumption is a main driver of forest degradation in sub Saharan Africa. Urban growth projections for the continent suggest that the relevance of this process will increase in the coming decades. Forest degradation associated to charcoal production is difficult to monitor and commonly overlooked and underrepresented in forest cover change and carbon emission estimates. We use a multitemporal dataset of very high-resolution remote sensing images to map kiln locations in a representative study area of tropical woodlands in central Mozambique. The resulting maps provided a characterization of the spatial extent and temporal dynamics of charcoal production. Using an indirect approach we combine kiln maps and field information on charcoal making to describe the magnitude and intensity of forest degradation linked to charcoal production, including aboveground biomass and carbon emissions.     Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Seismoakustische Aktivität in einem Kohleflöz in Abhängigkeit von Entspannungsmaβnahmen. Die seismoakustische Aktivität im Flöz „Johann Präsident“, Streb 482, auf der Zeche „Friedrich der Große“ (Ruhr-Gebiet) wird unter Berücksichtigung der Einflüsse der Entspannungsmaßnahmen analysiert. Die Verteilung der Herde der seismoakustischen Ereignisse, die seismiche Ausbreitungsgeschwindigkeit und die Schwinggeschwindigkeit bzw. die freiwerdende Energie werden untersucht. Die Entspannungsmaßnahmen haben einen deutlichen Einfluß auf diese drei Parameter. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, daß die meisten seismoakustischen Herde innerhalb von 40 m vor der Strebfront liegen, und ihre Muster der Verteilung Hinweise auf Zonen hoher Druckkonzentration angeben. Es wird eine Schwankung der seismischen Ausbreitungsgeschwindigkeit bis zu +5% bei erhöhtem Druck und −10% während der Entspannungsmaßnahmen beobachtet. Auch die Schwinggeschwindigkeit wird durch die Entspannungsmaßnahmen stark reduziert.
    Abstract: Résumé L'activité sismoacoustique dans une couche de charbon en dépendance des opérations de détente. L'activité sismoacoustique dans la couche “Johann Präsident, 482” de la houillère “Friedrich der Große” (Ruhr-Région) est analysé en considération de l'influence des opérations de détente. La répartition des foyers d'événement sismoacoustique, la vitesse des ondes sismiques et la vitesse du mouvement de particule, c'est-à-dire l'énergie libérée, sont vérifiés. Les opérations de détente ont une influence nette sur ces trois paramètres. Les resultats montrent, que la plupart des foyers d'événement sismoacoustique sont déterminés dans les 40 mètres avant la taille en activité et que leurs structures de répartition permettent des conclusions quant à la concentration de la pression élévée. La variation de la vitesse des ondes sismiques est jusqu'à +5% pendant pression élévée et −10% au cours des opérations de détente. La vitesse du mouvement de particule est aussi très reduite.
    Notes: Summary Seismoacoustic Activity in a Coal Seam in Relevance to Destressing. Analysis of the seismoacoustic data obtained in the coal seam “Johann Präsident [482]” of the mine “Friedrich der Große” of Ruhr area has been carried out with emphasis on the influence of destressing. The parameters studied are the source distribution pattern, seismic propagation velocity and particle velocity (energy released). Marked changes in these three parameters due to destressing are noticed. The results show that most of the sources of the seismoacoustic events lie within 40 m ahead of the working face with their distribution pattern revealing zones of stress concentration. Accumulation and relief of excessive stress have affected the seismic propagation velocity by +5% and −10% respectively. Particle velocity is also significantly reduced due to destressing.

    Notes: The velocity of supersonic pulses in cylindrical drill cores and rock samples is measured as a function of the frequency or wave length λ of the pulses. If λ is very much lower than the diameter D of the drill core –λ 〈 D– the higher velocity of the longitudinal waves vl appears; on the other side we get the lower velocity of the rod waves vd (Stabdehnungswellen) if λ 〉 D.Some drill cores from the carbon were found the velocities of which for sonic and supersonic pulses do not follow the above rule. It is shown that these cores have a constant velocity both for short and for long wave lengths in a frequency range between 5 kHz and 2 MHz.
