Description / Table of Contents:
Model substances from the series of even-numbered alkyl carboxylates of chain-length C12—C18 were used to study the effects of the alkyl group of these emulgators on the course of the butadiene/styrene emulsion polymerization. Special attention was paid to establishing these relationships in cases where the initiators used were soluble in water or in the polymer. It was found that the length of alkyl chains of the K-alkyl carboxylate exerts a considerable effect on the initial polymerization rate during the phase of particle formation. The overall polymerization rates in the zero-order phase are identical and independent of the K-alkyl carboxylate chain length. The results show that the average number of radicals per particle, which establishes itself in the polymerization systems investigated, amounts to n̄ 〉 0.5, where n̄AIBN 〉 n̄K2S2O8. A correlation exists between the initial rate, the solubilization of the monomers, and the length of the K-alkyl carboxylate chains.
Notes:
