    Notes: Despite the rapid progress being made in the synthesis of diamond films and recent interest in polishing of diamond films, no systematic measurements of friction and wear on polished diamond films have been reported. In the present study, chemomechanical and laser polishing techniques are used, and friction and wear data on the chemomechanically polished diamond films are presented. With the chemomechanical polishing technique used in this study, the rms roughness of hot filament chemical vapor deposited diamond films can be reduced from about 657 to about 170 nm with rounding off of sharp asperities with no change in the diamond structure. The polished films exhibit coefficient of friction (∼0.1) and wear rates much lower than that of unpolished films. Friction and wear properties of the polished films are comparable to that of single-crystal natural diamond. Based on this study, it is concluded that polished films are potential candidates for tribological applications.

    Notes: In this paper, DLC coatings on a rigid magnetic disk were ion implanted with nitrogen and carbon ions to improve their wear lives. Nitrogen and carbon ion implantation with a dose of 5×1015 ions cm−2 at 200 keV have shown significant improvements in the coefficient of friction and sliding wear life which suggests that ion-implanted DLCs may be more desirable overcoats. Microstructural examinations of implanted films show that these films are still amorphous with no long range order. Implanted DLC films also may be attractive as an overcoat for the slider surface. An approximately 20-nm-thick fullerene film, a new solid lubricant, was also deposited on the disk surface to reduce its friction and wear. Fullerene films exhibited lower friction, however, these readily formed a transfer film on the mating slider surface. Since any transfer and movement of the material at the head-disk interface is undesirable, fullerene films are not expected to be potential overcoats. Coefficient of friction of implanted DLC and fullerene films on a microscale was also measured and was found to be lower than that on macroscale. Microfriction values of unimplanted and implanted DLC films were comparable.

    Notes: Burnished graphite powders and physical vapor-deposition (PVD) coatings of layered crystalline materials such as MoSx have often been used as solid lubricants. This letter will report on a novel ion-induced modification of a graphite-powder coating on a silicon surface. Even at very low ion doses, the bombardment results in structural modifications observed as a considerable reduction in x rays reflected from the (002) sliding planes, which indicates an amorphization process. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies have confirmed almost complete amorphization with 200 keV Ar ions at 1016 ions cm−2. A commercial scanning tunneling microscope (STM) was used as an advanced profilometer to study ion-induced changes in the surface morphology at the powder surface. The mechanical properties of the combined graphite-coating/silicon system were studied by nanoindentation technique, and the perspectives in ion-beam burnishing of graphite coatings will be discussed.

    Notes: Fullerenes take the form of hollow, geodesic domes, which are formed from a network of pentagons and hexagons. The C60 molecule has the highest possible symmetry (icosahedral) and assumes the shape of a soccer ball. At room temperature, fullerene molecules pack in a face-centered-cubic lattice bonded with weak van der Waals attractions. Fullerenes can be dissolved in solvents such as toluene and benzene and easily sublimed. The resilience, high load bearing capacity, low surface energy, high chemical stability, and spherical shape of C60 molecules and weak intermolecular bonding offer great potential for various mechanical and tribological applications. Sublimed films of C60 have been produced and friction and wear performance of these films in various operating environments are the subject of this letter.

    Notes: Abstract The present investigation deals with the polarographic behaviour of iodate ions in various aqueous mixtures of methanol, ethanol, n-propanol, iso-propanol, 1,2-propanediol, 1,3-propanediol, and glycerol at 30°C. 0.1M-NaOH was used as a base electrolyte. The half-wave potential ranges from 1.24 to 1.46 and the diffusion current decreases with increasing percentage of the solvent. The plots ofi d vs. $$\surd \bar h$$ andi d vs.c were linear and pass through origin for all the solvent mixtures, showing that the limiting current is diffusion controlled. The plots of logi/(id−i) vs.E d.e. were linear for all the aqueous organic solvent mixtures, but the value of slope suggested that the reductions are irreversible. The electrode kinetics was studied byKoutecky's method for irreversible electrode process.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Für laminare Zwangskonvektion wurde der Einfluß der Wandkrümmung in Längsrichtung mit Hilfe angepaßter asymptotischer Entwicklungen untersucht. Benutzt man die klassische Grenzschichtlösung als erste Näherung, so lassen sich Geschwindigkeits- und Temperaturfeld als Störung zweiter Ordnung mittels einer Ähnlichkeitsmethode berechnen. Die Wandtemperatur kann eine Potenzfunktion des Abstands vom Staupunkt sein. Die gekoppelten gewöhnlichen Differentialgleichungen wurden numerisch gelöst; der Einfluß der Wandkrümmung, Prandtl-Zahl, Wandtemperaturverteilung und Druckgradient auf Temperaturprofil und Temperaturgradient wurde graphisch dargestellt. Die Änderung eines typischen Temperaturprofils und die prozentuelle Änderung der ersten Näherung durch die Krümmung werden ebenfalls graphisch angegeben.
    Notes: Abstract The effect of longitudinal surface curvature on heat transfer has been analysed for laminar forced convection by the method of matched asymptotic expansions. Utilizing the classical solution of boundary layer equations as the first order approximations, the second order perturbation for the velocity and temperature field has been calculated by a similarity analysis. The analysis permits the wall temperature to vary as a power function of distance from the stagnation point. Numerical solutions have been obtained for the resulting coupled ordinary differential equations. The results for the variation in the second order temperature profile and the second order wall temperature gradient due to surface curvature parameter, Prandtl number, wall temperature distribution parameter, and pressure gradient parameters are presented graphically. The variation in a typical temperature profile due to curvature, and percentage variations from the first order theory due to longitudinal surface curvature are also presented graphically.
