Notes: Abstract  The variation of the base pressure coefficient (Cp), and the characteristics of the velocity power spectra for arrays of two-, three- and four-cylinders aligned normal to the flow are presented. For the two-cylinder array with s/d=0.750 (where s is the spacing between the top and bottom surfaces of adjacent cylinders and d is the diameter of the cylinder) and Re=2.5×103, peaks in the power spectra of 145 and 45 Hz which correspond to Strouhal numbers of 0.35 and 0.11 have been observed. For the three-cylinder array with Re=2.5×103, at 0.338?s/d?0.730, three quasi-stable modes are observed. For 0.730?s/d?0.850, flopping and one quasi-stable mode are observed. For 0.850?s/d?1.202, only one mode is observed. The hot-wire power spectra measured downstream of the cylinder array on the center plane between the top and center cylinder and, also on the plane at s/2 above the top cylinder has three relative peaks that correspond to a wake structure, i.e. a pattern of vortices. For the four-cylinder array, when 0.338?s/d?0.750, four quasi-stable modes are observed. First, a mode can be observed in which the average Cp value of the top cylinder is relatively high, the average Cp value of the bottom cylinder is relatively low, and the average Cp values of the two center cylinders are nearly equal. A second mode is sometimes observed that is similar to the first except that the relatively high and low average Cp values of the outer cylinders are interchanged. A third mode is observed in which the average Cp value of the upper–inner cylinder is relatively high, the average Cp value of the lower–inner cylinder is relatively low, and the average Cp values of the outer cylinders are nearly equal. A fourth mode can be observed that is similar to the third mode except that the relative high and low average Cp values of the two inner cylinders are interchanged. For 0.750?s/d?1.202, only two of these modes are observed.

Notes: This note describes passive pressure reduction devices for use with sensitive instruments. Two gas circuits are developed which not only provide a pressure reduction under flow demand, but also limit the maximum pressure that the source can exert under a no-flow condition. The first design approach presented is a method that involves conventional orifices in a pressure divider network analogous to a voltage divider in electronics. The second method detailed, utilizing the discharge end of a jet pump, amplifies the mass flow rate of the source, reduces the source pressure at free delivery, and limits the pressure at shutoff.

Notes: This note presents a unique means of increasing the efficiency of a jet pump. Much research has been devoted to the study of elliptical nozzles on jets and their ability to increase the amount of fluid entrainment over round jets with equal perimeters. Since the efficiency of a jet pump is directly related to the ability of the primary jet to entrain fluid, a jet pump is an obvious potential application of these elliptical nozzles. In this study, the efficiency of a jet pump is measured using a jet with a round cross section and a jet with an elliptical cross section that has a 3:1 aspect ratio. At high flowrates, the jet pump using the elliptical jet is shown to have an efficiency that is approximately a factor of 6 greater than the pump using the round jet. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The effect of a plate array on a turbulent velocity and turbulent concentration field is determined. Profiles of mean and root-mean-square velocity and concentration, profiles of temporal and spatial unmixedness, and profiles of the variance of the gradient of velocity and the variance of the gradient of concentration are presented. Velocity and concentration integral length scales are compared. A biplane injection grid is used to produce the turbulent concentration and turbulent velocity field. Helium is injected through the jets at the grid nodes as air passes through the grid. The time-resolved velocity and concentration data are obtained using a two-sensor probe that consists of a hot wire and a TSI 1440-20 aspirating concentration probe. The addition of a plate array is shown to decrease the spatial unmixedness to a nearly zero value in about half the downstream distance observed without plates. Further, an increase in dissipation is shown with the array in place that reduces the temporal unmixedness to a value less than the value observed without the plates in about one-third the downstream distance. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: After the first operation of the SERSE superconducting source assembled with reduced performance coils, the tests of the new SERSE magnetic system were carried out with excellent results. The specifications of the design field were reached and exceeded. The new coils were mounted and SERSE is now able to run at full performance magnetic field. The today's status of the facility, electron cyclotron resonance source and new magnetic configuration, is described. The first tests as a multicharged ion source have just started, and a few preliminary results are given and commented. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: This article presents a unique hybrid flowmeter that combines the turndown ratio/low resistance benefits of a variable area differential pressure flowmeter with the low component simplicity of a target flowmeter. The design attaches a single element strain gage to the flexural membrane suspended in a fluid flow passage, eliminating the need for force or pressure transducers. A prototype of the concept produced favorable results that conformed well to a theoretical model.

Notes: An adjustable gas-blending apparatus is hypothesized that would maintain a consistent mixture over a broad range of flowrates. The design equations for the unique valve seat required for such an apparatus are developed and solved numerically. An example seat is calculated and illustrated in table form. For preliminary study, a prototype is constructed and empirical data are presented which substantiate the design.
