    Notes: Significant variations in the number of white and red blood cells, haematocrit and haemoglobin were found throughout the year in sexually mature male and female tench Tinca tinca. In general, the lowest values were observed during autumn–winter and the highest during summer, with males exhibiting higher values than females. Plasma glucose, cholesterol and triglycerides were lower during the winter than during the summer–autumn seasons in both sexes. Gonado-somatic and hepato-somatic indices were inversely correlated in female tench throughout the year. Seasonal patterns in liver metabolic resources were very similar for both sexes. For males and females, liver glycogen and proteins increased during the autumn, whereas the liver stored lipid during spring. Dorsal muscle mainly deposited glycogen, whereas lipid was mainly stored in the ventral muscle. Relations between seasonal changes in environmental factors, such as feeding and temperature are discussed.

    Notes: The effects of intracerebroventricular (ICV) and intraperitoneal (IP) administration of galanin and β-endorphin on food intake have been studied in satiated tench held at 21 ± 2 °C. Food intake was evaluated at 0–2 h and 2–8 h after injection. The same treatments were carried out in tench and goldfish acclimated to 10 ± 1 °C. Central administration of either galanin or β-endorphin significantly increased food intake at 2 h and 8 h after injection in tench acclimated to 21 ± 2 °C, but no change in feeding was observed after IP treatments. Low temperature (10 °C) significantly reduced food intake in both tench and goldfish, and neither central nor peripheral administration of galanin or β-endorphin was found to modify feeding. The results indicate that galanin and opioids play a role in the central regulation of feeding in tench, but the stimulatory effect of these neuropeptides did not reverse the feeding inhibition produced by exposure to low temperature.

    Notes: The effects of different protein, lipid and carbohydrate diets on growth and energy storage in tench, Tinca tinca L., were studied. Over a 2-month period fish were fed four different diets: control, protein-enriched, carbohydrate-enriched and lipid-enriched. The best growth rates were obtained with the control and protein-enriched diets; the carbohydrate diet produced the worst results (lowest specific growth rate, weight gain, nutritional index and hepatosomatic index). These results suggest that it is not advisable to reduce dietary fish protein below 35%, and that it is not possible to obtain a protein-sparing effect of either lipids or carbohydrates, at least in our experimental conditions. The high-protein diet resulted in the storage of energy excess as muscle proteins and hepatic glycogen. Tench fed the high-carbohydrate diet stored carbohydrates as muscle glycogen and reduced plasma triglycerides. Finally, both liver and muscle lipid content were in positive correlation to dietary lipid.
