Devenu un archétype, il permet une analyse passionnante des rapports entre la littérature et la vie. Après ce qu’a connu l’Europe au XXe siècle, nul ne peut voir Shylock sur scène sans frissonner.

    Notes: We simulated population dynamics of bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) inhabiting six discrete habitat patches in the Badlands ecosystem, South Dakota. Modeled populations were subjected to a range of potential management actions and rates of disease-causing infection. Simulated disease varied in severity from mild (∼12% mortality) to severe (∼67% mortality), with infections imposed once, at regular intervals, or with a fixed probability each year. In the absence of disease, 200-year extinction rates were uniformly low and insensitive to changes in colonization rate or area of suitable habitat. A single infection, accompanied by change in the area of suitable habitat or colonization rate, resulted in extinction rates of up to 40%, and large changes in average population size (up to 10-fold with changes in area; 4-fold with changes in colonization rate). Simulations with multiple infections, which are probably most realistic, generally resulted in extinction rates that exceeded 20% over a 200-year period. Model results clearly showed that efforts directed toward reducing the frequency or severity of disease are of highest priority for improving the success of attempts to restore bighorn sheep populations. Increases in areas of suitable habitat or improvements to corridors between existing habitat patches were far less likely to improve persistence of simulated sheep populations than reductions in the impact of disease. Although theory predicts that enhanced movements may exacerbate effects of disease, increased colonization rates resulted in relatively small but consistent increases in persistence and average population size for all combinations of parameters we examined.

    Notes: Abstract We compared forage digestion and passage rates among three groups of Nubian ibex (Capra ibex nubiana) — mature males, non-lactating females, and lactating females — to test hypotheses relating intraspecific digestive ability to body mass and reproduction costs. We hypothesized that large males (60 kg) would exhibit longer forage retention times and more complete digestion of fermentable cell walls than adult females (23 kg). We tested these predictions by measuring digestion and retention of a grass hay and an alfalfa hay, forages that exhibited contrasting rates and extents of cell wall digestion. Consistent with predictions, males retained both forages longer than non-lactating females. However, by substantially increasing gut fill, lactating females increased both intake and retention time with respect to non-lactating females. Contrary to predictions, all three groups digested the grass (66% digestible) and alfalfa hay (63%) equally well. Alfalfa cell wall was less digestible than that of grass hay (60% vs 69% digestible), and retention time of alfalfa was consistently, but not statistically significantly, shorter. Fiber digestion was not correlated with retention time, emphasizing the ability of behavioral processes to modify digestion rate. We postulate that females achieved their greater digestion rate by masticating forages much more thoroughly than males.

    Notes: Foraging herbivores respond to the spatial pattern of resources at a variety of scales. At small scales of space and time, existing models capture the essence of the feeding process and successfully predict intake rates. Models that operate over larger scales have not exhibited a similar success, in part because we have a limited understanding of the rules used by animals to make decisions in spatially complex environments, or of the consequences of departing from these rules. To evaluate the rules that large herbivores use when navigating between forages, we examined movements of bighorn sheep foraging on apparent prey (alfalfa plants) in hand-constructed patches of plants. Observations of movements and path lengths were compared to simulations that used a variety of different rules-of-thumb to determine a search path. Rules used in simulations ranged from a random walk with various detection distances, to more complicated rules that solved a variant of the travelling salesman problem. Simulations of a random walk yielded movement lengths that exceeded observations by a factor of 3 for long detection distances, and by 30-fold for short detection distances. Observed move distances were most closely approximated by simulations based on a nearest-neighbor ruleover 75 % of all moves by bighorn sheep were to the closest available plant. Movement rules based on random walks are clearly inappropriate for many herbivores that typically consume visually apparent plants, and we suggest the use of a nearest-neighbor rule for modelling foraging by large herbivores.
