Conclusions 1. The nonlinear deviations of empirical dependences of the logarithm of notch opening f on the logarithm of the number of cycles N are evidence of the appearance of a visually detectable crack in a specimen. Thus, the starting of a curvilinear section on curves of log fmax-log N can be used as a criterion of crack initiation. 2. Crack initiation corresponds to the beginning of a monotonic increase in the proposed parameterα, which is calculated using log fmax−log N curves. 3. There is a directly proportional relation between the parameter a and crack lengthl, and the proportionality factor is an exponential function of the maximum nominal stress of the cycle.
