Description: Because Jerdon’s Second Supplement, published in 1845, reflects an exchange of information with Edward Blyth, the date of issue requires interpretation to position it in relation to several papers that year by Blyth. The evidence suggests that we should accept that it appeared soon after 9th August 1845. The only names potentially affected by this resolution are the generic name Phragamaticola the establishment of which is reviewed, and Phragamaticola olivacea ‘Blyth’ Jerdon, which is in synonymy.

Description: The history of the generic name Anthracoceros is reviewed. It is confirmed that the type species usually cited, Buceros malabaricus Gmelin, 1788, was not the first subsequently included nominal species. It is further shown that neither of the nominal species included in Anthracoceros by Bonaparte in 1854 can be considered as type candidates. This mistaken use of Anthracoceros aside, the type species of Anthracoceros is shown to be Buceros monoceros Shaw, 1811, by subsequent monotypy (Art. 69.3), and the correct citation given.

Description: The currently accepted citation for Gymnoris: J.E. Gray, 1831, is shown to be fundamentally erroneous. The first valid citation is that of Blyth in 1845. However the nominal type species’ name is preoccupied, and the nomen novum of Fringilla xanthocollis E. Burton, 1838, should be associated with it. The correct citation is given in full.

Description: Phylogenetic analysis supports the placement of Nesoctites as the sister-group of all \nextant woodpeckers (Picidae), except Jynx, Sasia, Verreauxia, and Picumnus. Bock (1994) listed \n\xe2\x80\x98Nesoctitinae\xe2\x80\x99 Wolters, 1976, as an available family-group name. We show that the latter name \ndid not meet the requirements of the ICZN Code (1999) and is therefore unavailable. However, \nShort (1974) used the name Nesoctitini and described differences with other woodpeckers and \nshould, therefore, be regarded as the author of the family-group name.

Description: We conclude that the reasons hitherto given for non-recognition of the generic name Ixos in the family Pycnonotidae were erroneous. The broad genus employed by the proponents of that view is now considered too broad, and we concur with Sibley & Monroe (1990) that several generic names must be used, including Ixos. No genus can be constructed except around the name of its type species, and no other species within such a genus may be the type species of a generic name that is older. The arrangement offered by Sibley & Monroe (1990) was flawed because this rule was not observed. We therefore offer a complete revision. We believe it to be desirable to recognise several more genera than those recognised by Sibley & Monroe (1990), at least until we have the molecular evidence available to make firmer judgements.

Description: Multi-locus and phylogenomic studies have clarified the taxonomic limits and \nhigher-level relationships among rails (Rallidae). A recently proposed classification of rails by \nKirchman et al. (2021) listed nine tribes. The names of three of these (Gymnocrecini, \nAmaurornithini and Pardirallini) were introduced by Livezey (1998), but these names do not \nmeet the requirements of the ICZN Code (1999) and are therefore unavailable. We formally \ndescribe these taxa and make the names available for nomenclatural purposes. In addition, we \nclarify the apparent incongruence among recent phylogenetic studies in the generic (and tribal) \nplacement of Zapornia akool.

Description: Recent phylogenetic studies have agreed that the Snow Partridge Lerwa lerwa and the Blood Pheasant Ithaginis cruentus should be placed in Phasianinae as the successive sister taxa to all other members of this clade. We suggest that each of these species should be recognized as a separate tribe. The family‐group name Lerwini von Boetticher, 1939 is here resurrected for Lerwa lerwa. We also show that the family‐group name Ithagininae Wolters, 1976, is unavailable for Ithaginis cruentus. We therefore describe a new family‐group name Ithaginini.
