Summary Alcian Blue1, a phthalocyanin dye which is used to stain acid mucopolysaccharide substrates in fixed histologic preparations, can be delivered in vivo to rabbits, in high doses, in the range of pH 7.4, provided precautions are taken to keep the dye in solution and free of particulate matter. Used in this way, the dye has a short half-life in the plasma, shows no appreciable binding to serum proteins, is not excreted in the bile and only a trace of the dye appears in the urine. Dyes related and unrelated to Alcian Blue have been evaluated in vivo and their unique properties have been described. Alcian Blue delivered in vivo either stains or colors glomerular basement membrane (Parsons and McManus, 1964; Grant and Becker, 1967).
