    Notes: The microscopic diffusional dynamics of H and D on Pt(111) have been studied over length scales between 3 and 14 Å by quasielastic helium atom scattering. Data taken over a wide range of parallel wave vectors (0.3 Å−1≤|ΔK|≤3.1 Å−1) in the surface temperature range 140 K≤Ts≤250 K and at coverages 0.05 ML≤aitch-thetaH≤0.66 ML, provide evidence for an isotropic single jump mechanism with an activation energy of 68±5 meV and a pre-exponential factor of D0=1.1±0.5×10−3 cm2 s−1 at low coverages. The diffusion coefficient is 2 to 3 orders of magnitude higher than found in an earlier laser induced desorption experiment, whereas the dependence on coverage is similar. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: High resolution helium atom scattering (HAS) has been used to measure the adsorption, diffraction and low frequency vibrations of acetic and propionic acids adsorbed on the Pt(111) surface at 170 K. Acetic and propionic acid adsorb at 170 K as isolated molecules, initially, with evidence for the dissociation of a fraction of the molecules to produce CO. At the completion of the monolayer helium diffraction shows that the molecules are locally ordered with characteristic length scales of 3.6 Å and 4.5 Å. By comparing the HAS time-of-flight spectra for the hydrogenated and deuterated adsorbed molecules the parallel wagging mode frequencies for the acetate and propionate bidentate components could be determined to be 12.6 meV and 8.9 meV, respectively. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Robotic solutions for the handling of food products have been notably absent from suppliers' catalogues and indeed from research laboratories. This is primarily due to the peculiarities that handling food adds to the general pick-and-place task. These are the complexity of handling non-rigid products that are infinitely variable in shape, the hygiene requirement which stipulates IP65 or better for the hose-down environment, and the reality that the food industry produces low margin products that only make substantial profits at large volumes, whilst also requiring perfect product presentation to the consumer. In this environment, tasks which have both a short payback and other commercial advantages, such as increased operator safety or improved quality, whilst also being technically feasible, are not immediately obvious.

    Notes: Purpose - The paper describes a pipe repair conducted in August 2004 using two types of snake-arm robot. The pipe was located 5?m below the reactor core of Ringhals 1 nuclear reactor. Design/methodology/approach - The two types of robot worked co-operatively to replace a section of critical pipe. The 23-degree of freedom arm snaked around obstructing pipes to positions cameras in a humanly unreachable location in order to give the ideal view of the work site. The more substantial second arm used 13 degrees of freedom to deliver fixtures, cutting tools, gas shields, inspection equipment and also conducted both tack welding and continuous welding. Findings - The leaking pipe was repaired manually during the 2004 outage. The robots successfully completed the externally assessed Factory Acceptance Tests which involved copying the complete procedure on a purpose built mock-up. The robots are now on standby for 2005 and beyond. Practical implications - The successful completion of this extremely difficult task indicates that snake-arm robots are now a viable solution to a variety of complex access tasks in all industries including aerospace, pharmaceuticals, the miltary sector and nuclear industries. Originality/value - The paper describes a procedure that has never been attempted before using two completely new designs of redundant snake-arm robot.

    Notes: Two, previously unobserved, low-frequency vibrational modes of c(4×2) CO/Pt(111), measured using high-resolution helium atom scattering, are reported. The modes, at frequencies of (h-dash-bar)ω=8 meV and (h-dash-bar)ω=10 meV, are nearly dispersionless, similar to the previously known low-frequency mode at (h-dash-bar)ω=7 meV, which was also observed in the present measurements. From the intensity dependence on wave vector and relative intensity to the (h-dash-bar)ω(approximate)7 meV mode, we suggest that the new modes are also polarized parallel to the Pt(111) surface and, further, that they are associated with the bridge bonded CO molecules. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The energies of the frustrated translational vibrations parallel to the surface (T-mode) of isolated CO molecules adsorbed on various flat, regularly stepped and defective surfaces of copper have been measured using high resolution He-atom scattering. Whereas on the Cu(111) and Cu(001) surfaces CO has a T-mode energy of about 4.0 meV, at the steps of the Cu(211) and Cu(511) surfaces it is reduced to 3.0 meV. The same energy was observed for scattering parallel and perpendicular to the step edge directions. At defects, which were created by sputtering under different conditions, two additional T-mode energies of 3.2 meV and 2.5 meV were observed and are attributed to CO molecules adsorbed at step edges and at "isolated'' defects, respectively. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Inelastic helium scattering (HAS) and infrared reflection adsorption spectroscopy (IRAS) have been used to measure the isotope shifts of the frequencies of both the parallel and perpendicular frustrated translation modes, as well as the frustrated rotation mode of CO molecules at on top sites on Cu(001). The measured isotope shifts for four different isotopomers indicates a significant rotational contribution to the parallel frustrated translation (T-mode), where the vibrational amplitude of the oxygen atom is significantly larger than for the carbon atom. Conversely, for the frustrated rotation the vibrational amplitude of the carbon atom was observed to be larger than for the oxygen atom. At surface temperatures above Ts=100 K a careful analysis of the peak shape of the HAS quasielastic peak shows a small broadening, which is attributed to a rapid diffusion of the CO molecules. The measured dynamic diffusion barrier of 31±10 meV is compatible with the shape of the potential at the on-top site and makes it possible to extend the potential energy surface to the region between the on-top sites. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Absolute diffraction probabilities for the scattering of D2 from a clean Cu(001) surface along the [100] azimuth have been measured at incident kinetic energies between 20 and 250 meV. The measured attenuation of the diffraction intensities with surface temperature corresponds to a surface Debye temperature of aitch-thetaD=341 K. The high-resolution angular distributions show clear evidence of rotationally inelastic diffraction (RID) peaks. The RID probability increases with incident energy and represents as much as 30% of the elastic diffraction probability at energies above Ei=200 meV. An Eikonal approximation analysis gives a value h=0.075 Å for the surface corrugation which is independent of incident energy. The rotational transition probabilities correspond to an effective value of δ=0.3 for the molecular eccentricity. The experimental results indicate that diffraction of D2 from Cu(001) can be accounted for by a hard-wall collision mechanism over the whole range of investigated energies. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The lifetime broadening of the frustrated translation (T) mode parallel to the surface of isolated CO molecules [(approximately-less-than)6% of a c(2×2) coverage] chemisorbed on Cu(001) has been studied with high resolution inelastic helium atom scattering as a function of the surface temperature and the parallel momentum transfer. The T excitation peak shows a temperature dependent peak shift and a broadening. The latter is attributed to a quartic anharmonic potential contribution described by a spectroscopic constant χe=−0.0085±0.0008. The extrapolated TS=0 K peak broadening is then γ0=85±5 μeV, corresponding to a vibrational lifetime τ=8±1 ps. We attribute this lifetime to substrate phonon mediated damping and electronic damping. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
